Does any mami got the offer letter from ESF Kindergarten (SW)?

I heard from others that some had already received notification (or acknowledge letter) with indication of which category their kids is being classified in other ESF campus.

Dont worry. I have checked with ESF WKS before and they said they have around 2XX applicants this year for 180 places. So competition is not too keen. Chance is still there for your girl. Good luck!!

Hi manstap,

There are 4XX applicants for 180 places in ESF TY K1 this year. Competition is far less than a lot of local kindergarten.

However, I don't know how many Cat 1 or Cat 2 among these 4XX applicants.

I applied for ESF TY K1 as well and is waiting for the result. However, still not sure if I shall put my girl there even if I am lucky enough to get their acceptance letter.

Seems ESF SW is the only ESF kinder that did not specify Cat 1 or Cat 2 in their acknowledgement letter.

1. Quite a number of parents not accepting ESF kinder offer after the school tour;
There will be 2nd, 3rd,....rounds.

I could not exactly know what other parents thought. From my experiences attending school tours (2 times), not all parents felt comfortable with ESF kinder philosophy;
1. Open Class-room;
2. Learn thro' play;
3. No 100% guarantee for ESF P1 place;
4. Less academic (of course, due to point 2)
5. No intensive Putonghua programme...
(thousands reasons omitted)
They were the questions that many parents did concern and some of them will decide to give up when they have a better option fulfilling their needs.

My son applied TY ESF. Just received the letter fr play visit. It's said that "Contracts will be issued on the next day of the play visit to successful applicants".

My daughter also studied TY ESF before. I remember that they've sent the offer letter to her before, not like now (Need pass the play visit). May be they change the admission procedure.

Did any parents have experience about the play visit? Have any children didn't got a seat after play visit?

Sounds interesting. No such arrangement last year. (Sent u a letter of school visit and asked you to sign the contract within 1/2 weeks).

Play visit day on 18 Jan

The letter said
Your child will be invited to take part in informal play activities with a small group of children of the same age. It will be conducted by experienced teaching staff and the whole process should take no longer than 30 minutes......
Following the play visit we may be in a position to offer your child a place in K1 for August 2010. Contracts will be issued on the next day of the play visit to SUCCESSFUL applicants.
Should we have any concerns about your child's needs and ability to access our curriculum, we may ask you to return for a further visit and meeting with the Principal.

That means has assessment.

i m applying the one in wks, my letter stated that:
"visits are being conduted throughout jan and we will inform you of the outcome of the visit by letter or email before the 2nd week in feb. contracts will be issued at this point to successful applicants...."

that means i need to wait almost 1 mth after the play day before i get the result!!

In fact, other ESFs do have more applicants than WKS (WKS has 2XX, Abacus has 4XX from the previous posts) Why WKS needs to screen the applicants throughout Jan but TY only need one day and release the results in the next day?

Your letter is "waiting list". Is it means they don't give you the date for play visit?

I called to TY ESF today, they said that Cat 1 or Cat 2 children have same procedure. They all need go to play visit. After that, they will offer a seat for successful applicants. It is a new procedure starts from this year.

I got play date invitation for my daughter I guess it's b/c of sbling priority. It mentions in the letter that "after the play visit....we may be in a position to offer your child a place in the kidnergarten..." somthing like that.

It's the same wordings as my elder one joined in 2008. so I guess it's pretty secure to have a place in the kindergarten unless my younger one is behaving extrememly bad.

It seems to all of us that some of the applicants may be UNSUCCESSFUL! Right?

As some parents in the past years said that ESF mailed the contract together with the letter of visit to the parents instead of issuing it after the visit.

Would you please verify this?

just got a call from KCIS and they are going to offer a place for my son and need to pay the deposit by Dec 17...however, am still waiting for Abacus. Hope it will come soon....as ESF is my target.

as far as I can remember, I received the contract right after the presentation (while my elder one was playing at the classroom). I notice that they do have quite different policies among different school, especially the wordings used in the interview letter. My elder one will be attending interview for primary school , and I noticed that there are different wordings used even they are in the same category with every other criteria being the same.
For kindergarten one, I believe among the cat 2 applicants, it will be done in a random order unless you have something to be prioritized.

Hello CJS mom,

The group for my elder one's visit consisted of at least 30 parents, and there were a few rounds of play visits in year 2008. So no need to be confused, just different policies at different schools.

You applied Abacus? My kid applied WKS, I think there are less cat 1 applicant in WKS in compare with Abacus.
Check the mailbox, maybe you'll get the letter tomorrow!!

I got a stamp "Category 2" on the acknowledgement letter I received upon submitting the application. But it has not been mentioned in the invitation letter. Don't know if that also apply in other ESF kindergarten.

Abacus Campus... informal visit on 19th Jan too.

I guess, they want to see the children too because they want to make sure that there is no special education needs (like autism, AS and ADHD) that they cannot accomodate in the classroom, which may be disturbing to other children. ESF schools were used to be famous to be very tolerant to SEN children and thus many non-chinese parents and rich chinese parents send their children there. This takes up a lot of resources and sometimes unfair to "normal" children.

Regarding Abacus parents in Cat 1 on waiting list. I just found out many of my friends (teachers in ESF system and alumni of ESF) live in Sai Kung area. Plus the children with elder siblings already attending ESF schools, that takes up many of the Cat 1 Abacus places. That may be one of the many reasons why Cat 1 children may still be on waiting list. There are too many children born in 2007, it seems.

But I prefer they offer me the contract at the end of the tour, too... saves hassles and worries! I was going to ditch the GSIS interview if I get an offer this month! sigh... looks like more interviews afterall!

So it seems no chance for the cat 2 kids who applied for abacus.

I was wanting to confirm the abacus offer so that I won't need to swap my boy to Woodlands for the rest of the school term. But now it seems that I better swap him to Woodlands and hopefully it gives us better chance when we apply for ESF primary.

I think you better have contigency plan and not to rely on ESF Primary only cos' I think their prior in Primary is like this:
1) Cat. 1+Sibling+ESF Kinder
2) Cat. 1+ESF Kinder
3) Cat. 1+Non-ESF Kinder
4) Cat. 2+Sibling+ESF Kinder
5) Cat. 2+ESF Kinder
6) Cat. 2+Non-ESF Kinder

Your kid will be in Type 6. The competition for ESF Primary is stronger as a lot of 'Real' Cat. 1 would choose other kinders over ESF Kinder but come back to ESF in Primary.

I think you better have contigency plan and not to rely on ESF Primary only cos' I think their prior in Primary is like this:
1) Cat. 1+Sibling+ESF Kinder
2) Cat. 1+ESF Kinder
3) Cat. 1+Non-ES ...

Yes, I know the chance is slim. Other than ESF primary or RC, we also think about the DSS schools & DBS (daddy is an old boy so we'll at least have the interview opportunity). I know all are difficult to get in, and we must strengthen his Chinese proficiency.

We've also thought about moving to another catchment for better chance of ESF enrollment. Anyway, let's see how my boy is doing at Woodlands first.

I am wondering if the purpose of the informal visit is to find out who the "real" Cat 1 students are.  It seems that there are extraordinary high number of "Cat 1" students this year.

I heard that in the primary school interview, if the teacher found out that a kid who was claimed not be able to speak Chinese spoke Chinese during the interview (i.e. the parent lied), the application would fail right away.

In fact, ESF schools do admit students mastering both English and Chinese.  The point is, being a good role model to your kids, don't lie.  Moral education is far more important.

The above doesn't mean to offend anyone here.  It's just a gentle reminder.

My little daughter is in Cat 2, but she has an elder sister studying in one of the ESF primary school.
