Can anyone tell me where I can buy some good FCE preparation materials at reasonable price?  Those from Brit. Coun. are too expensive.
My daughter took the Flyer & PET without any special training, just applying her day-to-day knowledge of English.  However, I consider FCE is a bit more difficult & she lacks the life experiences for the appropriate age.  So, she would need some exercises & practices at this level.

Thank you in advance for your help.

My boy took PET exam in Mar and got merit too. He will be P4 in coming Sept. I guess your girl is even younger than him. She is really excellent. I'm going to let him try FCE too. Pass should not be a problem. But if i want to get a better result, I have to do some preperations. Please let me know if you find any cheap sample papers. Tks!

May I ask how old is your boy? (sorry that I am new & not familiar with everyone).
My husband says for a primary student, it is most important to have a good level of Use of English & good reading/writing technique.  Grammer will fall into places when the child grow older.

Keep the progress.  I'm sure he can make it.  Hope to come across you during the exam in coming Dec.
Even more important, wish you all the best for securing a place in a first class Sec. school.

From my previous experience, PET & FCE not very useful for first class secondary school. Excellent ECA results may be better chance.

Most schools base on :
Academic result
ECA
Conduct
Association(s)

Thank you very much for your sharing.

Frankly speaking, I (believe also for 77777 & BB-Clever) am not enrolling my kid in PET & FCE hoping that it is of high use for S1.
For me, I let my girl to take these & other tests just because she likes to take exam very much & she finds no challenges in school.

I am sure 77777's son has good enough academic ability & conduct for a 1st class S1.  While for BB-Clever, I believe that a 1st class S1 place is quite secure for her son.

Anyway, thanks again for your precious info.

peremum, 77777 & BB-Clever

I guess your kids are gifted in certain dimensions.
Did you confirm that and what's your plan accordingly?

Sorry, may be off topic!!!

ECA - Extra-curricular activities

For top schools, they use the rank order list to shortlist potential candidates according to their academic results. The achievements of ECA will have significant impact on the chance for interview.

Like Queen's College, they only shortlist 200 students out of 900+ for interview, 140 on academic qualification and 60 on ECA and special achievements.

Thank you for your good words about our kids.  Well.  "Gifted" is an over-used but always misunderstood term.  It would be much appreciated if you could tell me what you mean by "confirm".  Maybe you can also share with us your plan for your son.

I must say that I really adore you for your willingness to share with us so much of your experiences & knowledge.

Thank you for your compliment.  Thank GOD that she is self-motivated. But she also has her own emotional problems sometimes.  As a matter of fact, she always performs better in open exam than school ones.

Yes, I think she needs challenges.

Don't worry.  I'm sure your son is also a good boy (caring parents give rise to good kids) & can take good care of himself.

We have a unique definition of "Gifted kid"in our couple fellowship, Kid is a special gift from our Lord, all are different and special..........

You make a good point, I rephrase the word "Gifted" as two levels:
1. IQ test score; and or
2. Multiple-intelligence.

I guessed your kid may take IQ test  (WSIC) and "confirmed" as high learning ability.

The multiple intelligence
The eight currently accepted intelligences are:

For sharing, I post many replies since 2006 in Gifted education (Slow down in the last two years). If your are interested in that you can search in BK - ANChan59 + gifted.

My sharing touch on:
1. WSIC vs S-B IQ tests;
2. Double edged sword - High IQ
3. What parents can learn from gifted kid?
4. IQ vs multiple intelligence
5. Reflections on gifted education in HK
6. From learning disability to gifted
7. His primary school - support gifted kids
8. Gifted programs in HK - Maths
9. International exposure; etc

I copy and paste some of my replies on gifted education, around 12 pages Word file, I can't post it here.

Thank you.  I call it 特異功能.  There is always fierce competition among the famous schools on the areas other than academic, they will get the right person to win the champion.  If you have talents  ...

Yes, it's typical for DBS and YW to headhunt talented students, they also offer scholarships to them.

Solid academic foundation and ECA results (like Maths, speech, singing, music) also useful for top notch schools.

How's your kid doing in the test?

Don't worry.  Your son is definitely a bright kid.

BTW, any result from the S1 application so far.

Wish you all the best!

I'm sure your son will get a place in a good school.  Rest assured.

For my girl, her result is o.k., but not as good as she hope.  The strange thing is that she get good result in all areas except Reading.  However, Reading used to be her best section and she consistently get good result here during the preparation.

Thank you!

She has got over the disappointment now, and I am talking with her whether she want to re-sit the test or to have some other arrangement(s).

So, is your son planning to re-sit in June or Dec.?

Hi.  My daughter has not yet decided.  June is also the period for her school exam, ballet exam & piano exam, so probably will not take the test by then.  She is still thinking whether to re-take the FCE in Dec or go directly to CAE.

BTW, I hear that Cambridge/British council is considering to introduce the FCE-for Schools to HK.  But I do not know their schedule.
