Agreed.  In our days, it is not very difficult to get into an international school......now, the chance of getting into one is just like winning mark six!!

So true...... it is all because of the HK education system!!!!!!

SCMP reported on 8th Feb that "...It was reported in November that the city's top international schools were swamped with applications and were facing record waiting lists. The German Swiss International School, for example, said it had received 1,673 applications for 126 vacancies...."

I believe half of these 126 vacancies are probably in the German stream.  So in reality, we are talking about a ratio of 27:1.  Then they have a policy of giving priority to German, Swiss or Austrian nationals first. Siblings will come next and so on.  So the chance of gaining admission is pretty close to nil.  I am sure this is also happening in CIS, HKIS, ESF, CDNIS, FIS, SIS and many more.

By the way, the Government said there will be an additional 4,500 international school places available from 2011/12 and 2012/13 school years onwards.  I believe this would only serve to provide additional seats to those students who would like to exit the Hong Kong education system.  I doubt if it would affect the admission rates of the above international schools a bit.

I guess mrshoho is probably right.  The current dire situation probably has something to do with the HK education system.

Anyway, the trend is that the schools in UK and US are also swamped with people from HK and mainland China.  All these ever-increasing number of overseas students will eventually converge with students from the international schools in HK to vie for a place in the universities overseas.  If we add in the people from India and other developing countries, the next thing we will discover is that it will be very hard to secure a place in the universities/colleges in UK and US, not unlike what is now happening in the international schools in Hong Kong.

Chinese is a far more difficult language than English. Even kids are exposed the same quality and amount of time, they still prefer English. I heard a case where a top SIS primary (P2-P3) student (top in both English and Chinese) failed to gain admission from a local elite school due to poor Chinese and Maths even though her English far exceeded the school requirements. She was then switched to KCS. After about two years, she gained admission from the same local elite school.

Perhaps it's because SIS teaches Simplified Chinese characters.  That's why the kid had problems when she tried to switch to the local elite school.  KCS on the other hand teachers Traditional Chinese characters and she had less of a problem in making the switch after spending 2 years there.

Not exactly. This is a personal choice. And, even this is true for spme students, it is still better than local school where students get tutoring in other subjects too.

Sending one's kids to international school is just part of the story, the ultimate aim should be sending them overseas to complete their education in foreign universities. If they end up going to local universities after international school, they will still be caught up in "Asian style" force-fed education.

Most top IS are flooded with applications just because there is a lot of overlapping applicants.  One student's parent may send out 3,4,5.... or even more than 10 applications to both IS and local schools.  ESF, FIS, GSIC, CIS, SIS, HKIS, DBS, DGS, ST. Paul Co-edu., ST. Mary, La Salle, Maryknoll convent, St, Stephen......

On the other hand, if it had not been so difficult to secure a place in IS, parents would never have made so many concurrent applications (especially when each application involves filling out of forms and attending interviews etc. as well as an application fee of a few thousand dollars).
