I listened to the first few parts of the "Early Years Cassette" this morning. The teacher/instructor in the tape does pronounce /a/ instead of /ae/. And "Annie Apple" is really pronounced with "/a/nnie /a/pple", and so as the other words "arrow", "ants", etc.
I don't know whether this is the way of british accent or not. I hope I can have a chance to ask some native British.
