Body gestures (手勢) is very common in 中文朗誦  to an extent that it may be necessary. It is helpful in expressing the piece.  However, in english speech, some judges do not like a lot of movement.  Facial and voice expression are always required.

BTW, it is better to put the hands on the side rather than get them locked up at the back.
