However, as a Chinese living in Hong Kong, I believe learning Chinese ( to read and write with competency) is a must, not because of practical reasons, but with an identity issue.

Lots of my friends raised in the States or European countries, with excellent English, without communication competency in Chinese, they felt loss in certain stage of their life (mostly at adulthood), they need to learn and to search part of their Chinese identity by learning language to communicate and learning languge to search roots.

That's why I insist to put my kids in school with good Chinese learning curriculum, with good language and cultural foundation!

The quality of local offical Chinese curriculum is not up to the standard. Lots of DSS and private schools use their own Chinese curriculum if use PTH as a medium of instruction.

First change should be the curriculum change.

Second change should get rid of mechanical way of doing "standard" exercises.

A very good point to discuss regarding language learning. I want to know more about that.

Can you quote an example on what is a good "語感" in Chinese according to your observations on kids in HK, such as learning PTH or Cantonese?
