Only one PS for UCAS.  I have never heard of applying 2 Oxford programmes.

Although the CO of Oxford is slightly lower, fewer COs are given by Oxford and the percentage of applicants invited for interview is also lower.

Postpone submitting your son's non JUPAS applications, particularly he is applying for a nowadays not so competitive choice of engineering.  Otherwise, when your son receives the conditional offer, he needs to pay a deposit within a short time.

There were fast track and main round applications before.  It seems there is only main round this year.  But HKU's website has the following notes:
*Late applications will be accepted after the Main Round application deadline and before 12:00 noon, July 15, 2018 (Hong Kong Time).
**Only students who have submitted an application by the Main Round application deadline will be considered for interviews between December 2017 to January 2018. Interviews for late applicants will be considered on a case by case basis. Separate email invitation to interview will be sent to shortlisted students.
^Students who receive an offer of admission are normally required to accept the offer within two to three weeks.

Again, as engineering is not very competitive nowadays and interview is not normally mandatory, "late applications" may be considered if unwilling to pay the deposit at an unnecessarily early stage.  Better ask on the information day of course.
