I would like share my experience too.

My only son is very young (going to be 14 months old soon).  He has just been assessed by AP (the centre at North Point).  The clincial psychologist made it clear beforehand that there is no austic assessement that can be applied to such a small child.  

We acknowledge that fact, but we still go ahead with the assessment to see if the warning signs that we observed are genuine and if they are austistic features or not.

The assesment reconfirms that he has delay in all aspects (except gross and fine motor developments).  In particular his speech and communication and social skills far lag behind others of same age.   Some of his symptons :

- he has eye contacts for most of the time, but when we play at close distant, he refuses to have eye contact i.e. his behavour is inconsistent in this aspect
- he seldom, if not never, respond to someone calling his name or touching his shoulders.
- he don't undstand simple commands e.g. no
- he can mutter some sounds, but not with any meaning behind.  e.g.
- he has no initiation or any interest to share his feelings with us.  e.g. he never approach us or request us to play with him the favoriate toys or books.
- he won't copy other persons's actions.

The assessment indicates that he is "overly self-centered", lacks imitation skills and his attention span is too short.  We will arrange to start therapy soon to tackle the probems identified.  Of course, we live in Kln side, transportation is a real concern to us.  I wonder if there is any therapist  in this aspect who can provide services at our home.

He has tried OT once a week for several lessons.  There is improvement to his sensory problem.  At least, we can touch / hold his hands for sometimes now.

My son is 2 years 3 months and I suspected that there could be something wrong with him when he was 18 months old.  I took him to the "mother-child governemnt clinic" in March and the doctor, after a very brief assessment, wrote down "suspected of having autistic features and please come back again in December".  I am quite sure that my child is within the ASD spectrum but I really want to have a detailed assessment so that I can arrange for him the most appropriate training.  At present, he has 1 幼兒導師訓練 session + 1 speech therapy session every week.  I am wondering whether I should add OT training for him.  That's why I really want him to be assessed by a professional.  A BK mom has recommended a paediatrician to me.  I haven't made an appointment yet as I am still collecting information to see whether a psychologist/paediatrician is in a better position to do the assessment (as you know, this kind of assessment is very expensive so I don't want to waste money).  May I ask why you chose AP to do the assessment?  What do you think about that pscyhologist?  Many thanks in advance for your input.

I also live in Kowloon and my son's speech therapist (whose office is in Kowloon as well) is a very good and experienced one.  She was recommended to me by another BK mom.  If you would like to have her contact no., please feel free to pm me.

如果醫生建議要去特殊學校, 那孩子的問題可能比較多.
所以最好不要光等政府派位, 如果能負擔得起, 找一些自費的訓練給孩子, 例如協康會的青蔥計劃:

我會去試吓, 亞仔返左K1學到講說話好多. 有連接詞句, 他可能比同年的小朋友遲些上手, 現在的孩子都有好多出現問題. 做父母的真難, 又要工作, 政府總話生3個. 一個都難教.

Hi blmom,

I picked AP because it's specialised in autism, which is my main concern yet to be addressed.    Frankly, I am still very ignorant.  I am not sure if AP is good.  My son has seen a paediatric doctor at the beginning.  But that doctor has not recommended any thing for us, except examining his urine and hair and now eating supplements.   

For the  幼兒導師訓練 session + 1 speech therapy session your child are doing, are they provided by Govt ?  

If you want OT services, why not go to OT for assessment ? My son is now doing OT once a week at LINKS which is at Jordon.  The OT is very experienced and good.  The reason why I want to do OT at home is that my son will starts autism therapy (3 times a week) at North Point soon.  I don't want him to travel that often.

For the AP, the assessment took about 3 hrs to complete.  Of course, when I first spoke to the clincial psychologist on phone, she had indicated that at that very young age, she wouuldn't been able to confirm he's austic or not.  She started with observing how my son played with toys (in particular observing whether he'll approach any one to play with him or seek help or share his intrerest/joy/ or has eye contact with others).  This part took about 1 hr.  Then she interviewed the parents.   

At the end of the assessment, she let us know her observations.  I'd say she was very detailed.  We even didn't noticed some of the "weaknesses" she mentioned.  

She would prepare an report and let us know when we could start therapy.
