It can be argued the other way round, i.e. it'll be a disadvantage if not good in English as mainlanders are categorically better in Chinese.  I think the only competitive advantage Hong Kong left is to be better in English than all other Chinese (from Mainland and Taiwan, etc.) and better in Chinese than all foreigners (including Singaporeans and those who study in China/Taiwan).
