Dear all,

Long time no chat with you all. My daughter stop for two weeks when she finish the lesson 1:4. Tomorrow I asked the new violin teacher to my home have an interview for 1:1 . He is a young boy but finished Grade 8 few years ago. I hope he is good for my daughter la.
What kind of questions I need to asked the teacher?? any commend??? Anything I need to 留意下??? Can anyone can told me???

Hi Yan Yan and all other mothers,

my son's teacher brought us two books and they are for Grade 1 to 5, those books are for the scales and the sight reading of the music.  The teacher said she want to try some of the syllabus of Grade 1 see wether my son can try to exam Grade 1 next year.  He is now learning the book of 篠崎, up to no. 42, but sometimes tried to play like 變奏曲at the very last page of the book and learn the line E (no. 90 to 100, I forgot the exactly no.) then go back to learn the book.  He started to play "twinkle twinkle little star" three weeks ago and can play smooth now, then just last Sat. teacher started to teache him "Buterfly" (I am not sure the name in english is correct, just translate directly from the music book)

I don't know the progress of his learning is suitable or not since I don't know anything of the music.  He started his violin since last Dec. and he is 4 years and three mons now.  Let's share the progress .

我上星期問琴行個老細, 我話小提琴要學幾耐先有成績見到? 即可考級, 佢話起碼1, 2年, 嘩! 我咪有排交學費. 佢話基本功最緊要, 但呀女鐘意拉歌仔多d, 浪漫曲, 搖藍曲, 當然拉得難聽, 但都見佢手指仔懂按弦, 雖進度慢, 但比初頭學己有進步. 佢而家是4人1組, 我叫佢轉1:1, 佢唔肯, 可能怕悶.

佢而家個老師是5級, 其實是咪夠資歷教學生呢? 我問女佢有冇執佢'查'琴手勢, 呀女話冇, 是咪不夠盡責呢?

我都想知如何評估個老師好唔好?

I have questions too, any mums can help?

My son start violin will try Grade 1 exam next year (also almost learn about 1 to 2 years) However, my son is very shy to perform the violin in front of other people then teacher worry about he will also shy when he has the exam next year since he need to stay alone with the examiner then need to sing songs too.  He is now 4 years and 4 mons now.  Is that correct since I don't know anything about the how the exam will be conducted?  That's the problem we have recently face now.  Any other mums has good suggestions on how to encourge him to perform in front of strangers?

I can not comments teacher since I don't know about music but most important is did the child like the teacher?  My son like his teacher  very much.  She has corrected my son and she will tell me what problems my son has then I will also correct or remind him when he practise at home.

一般琴行都有教授小堤琴,在報讀前,有什麼需注意,如何知道他們是否好,如1:1家長是否可以在場,請大家幫助話我知,因為我對音樂/樂器完全沒有任何知識.

From my experience as a violin teacher, we are not sure the qualification of the teacher. Some music school will acceppt grade 5 teacher. But some better ones will only accept grade 8 and above and with other qualifications as well. These are more trust worthy. Yet still, the teaching method is also very important. There is no point in saying that a grade 5 violinist does not possess good posture or teahcing method!!

In my opinion, the posture is paramount important. though parents and also kids always look for 'real' achievement! like song playing and exams, it is worth spending a long time in the beginning to perfect the posture so as to smoothen the road of the child.

But, most of the parents would 'try' violin for their child. That's why most of the teacher will emphasise on songs and not posture to please parents and also the kids. What I think is, there are other ways to initiate the interest of the kid. And parents have to be patient! Note that, learning violin or music is a way to learn how to be 'patient', to 'control' and to nurture ones' own emotion.

Most importantly, violin is a difficult instrument for beginner! We have to understand that we are not born to have the talent for violin.

However, the sound of violin is so pleasing.

No doubt a proper posture is part of the basis of violin. Plus, fingering, bowing, intonation, accuracy.... everything counts... actually.
