Students are being forced to leave Hong Kong's top international schools as the financial crisis bites.
Often their parents have lost their jobs and are returning to their home countries.

Reports have put the pullouts at between 10 and 50 students at individual schools, although spokesmen for the Hong Kong International School and the English Schools Foundation insist there have been no unusual student movements in recent months.

"At least two of my [banker] friends from the club with young children have left Hong Kong due to the financial crisis," a sports club member said.

He said he knew of at least five people at the club, whose members are mostly from overseas, who returned to New Zealand and Australia after their contracts were terminated recently.

A memo from a brokerage house analyst revealed 10 students, aged 14 to 16, had to drop out a few weeks ago because their parents were leaving Hong Kong. That is a big difference from the usual two or three.

An admissions officer from the American International School said five students have left this term. "Two are returning to Korea, and some are returning to the mainland," she said.

A French International School spokeswoman said two families have been affected and their children had to leave the school.

A Discovery Bay International School spokeswoman said eight families were leaving this year although a clearer number would not materialize until closer to Christmas.

A German Swiss International School executive said there have been rumors, such as one school having up to 50 students leaving after the Lehman Brothers collapse, although he warned the rumors are not substantiated.

James Manning, communications manager for Hong Kong International School, said its student body of 2,650 has not seen significant changes in recent weeks.

"But that is not to say we are not concerned [about our possible vulnerability] in the financial crisis. Our admissions office is watching the situation closely," he said. Nearly half of HKIS students are Americans.

An English Schools Foundation spokesman said: "There have been fewer than 100 transfers out of 15,000 students [that we're aware of so far] across the board."

He added: "But we'll be keeping a close eye on the situation [in light of] the financial tsunami."

International schools overseas have also been affected, with one source saying up to 50 students had left a Tokyo school in the past three months because their parents had been laid off.

It's not unusual as we are really facing a global meltdown which is probably "oce in a century".  Not even IS which charge high tuition, even day-care centers and kindergartens in the US are facing the same problem of pull-outs due to parents' lose in job or lose in net worth.
