在朋友Facebook copy 出來的, 你們小五的小朋友懂嗎?  

Please match....

a.  show a clean pair of heels

這些像idiom或proverb的英文語句在自己求學階段真的沒有碰上很多(我沒有讀Eng Lit).  因小兒還未上小學, 我抱著玩樂心態試做, 最終竟全對, 但老實說, 我只懂一個(是肯定知道答案正確那種), 其餘八個都是猜中的.  各位家長, 現在小學的英文真的這麼艱辛,刁鑽嗎?  唔通真的不能同日而語?!

補充一句, 朋友女兒就讀的是本地一家傳統小學(附有中學部), 因最初我以為她唸的是國際小學.

為增加趣味, 我會在有人答對(或猜對)後告訴大家這英文題是出自哪一間小學.

Bravo!  100 marks!

You know what, I only know the meaning of "strike while the iron is hot" and for the rest, I need to guess.  Quite a few are "guessable" because we as adults we can easily choose the answers by elimination.  But I wonder if little kids can do this as well.

OK, let me unveil the source: it's Grade 5 English from the St Stephen's College Preparatory School.

I was surprised when I saw the question at from friend's Facebook.  It's really really difficult.

Very sad to see this local school get to this crazy level of spoon-feeding.  This is way too difficult for most P.5 kids who go to local schools!  

What's the point if the students can't really comprehend the meaning of these idiomatic expressions at this young age?

It's lucky that my daughter isn't the student there. Even if we know all the meanings, it's difficult to explain to kids who are only at the age of 10-11.

I think otherwise.  As I understand, the students are not spoon fed but learn the language naturally b'cos of the class environment (they have NETs for every class).  It's just not fair to compare it with the ordinary local schools.

When I attended its Open Day months ago, I found that the academic level of the school was quite high.  For example, the kids in Grade 1 learned "rhombus" in the math exercise (their Chinese/English and math workbooks were shown to visitors).  Yet, most of the kids I came across on that day carried smiling faces.

The one (should be in Grade 5 or 6) at the entrance greeted us in perfect Putonghua too.  Very impressive.

Think it this way.  Students at international schools learn English through extensive reading.  

If a local school with sufficient NET resources that help cultivate an atmosphere of English learning in a classroom setting, that local school is like an IS (I understand that most subjects are taught in English as well in this primary school).  The exercise that I copied here is supplementary to helping the kids build their power of comprehension when they do extensive reading.  Actually the meaning of many idioms quoted can be guessed.

Therefore, I think this primary school is not traditional in teaching English, unlike most of the local schools which follow the traditional way (i.e. grammar, grammar, grammar).
