2nd edition,

內容同1st edition是否差很多?

Our Principal
Mr Lau Chi Yuen (B.Sc., P.C.Ed., M.Sc., M.Ed.)

Principal's Message

Good Morning My Dear Colleagues and Students,

Welcome back to school.  First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everybody good health and improvement in the new academic year.

Our School was established in 1982.  For the past 30 years, the school has been providing students with an all-round education, laying equal emphasis on the five aspects: moral, intellectual, physical, social and aesthetic development.  With the joint efforts of both teachers and students in the past 3 decades, our achievements in various areas of education are encouraging.  The slogan for our 30th Anniversary is ‘Legacy and Innovation 「三十而立  承傳創新」. In the bygone years, we struggled and earned territory-wide appreciation and recognition.  Yet, this is no time to rest on our laurels.  We have to pass the spirit on.  We will continue to climb high and make breakthroughs.

To celebrate our 30th anniversary, our school has started a chain of activities.  We had the Kick-off Ceremony held on 19th January, followed by an academic talk delivered by our guest of honour Dr Chu Siu Cheung, senior lecturer of Hong Kong Baptist University's Language Centre on 11th May.  The topic is 「三十功名 八千里路 -師生關係與師道文化」. The talk explores teacher-student relationship against the background of Chinese Culture.  It is enlightening and highly applauded.  Another striking activity is the variety show 「濃情三十」held in the evening of 5th July. It was greeted with wide enthusiasm and appreciation. Besides, we have our 30th Anniversary Edition T-shirt, commemorative version of single-line paper and many other souvenirs which will be available for sale in due course. Meanwhile, we are preparing for the issue of our School Bulletin's Anniversary Edition and planning for the Open Days to be held from 26th to 28th April, 2013.  I am sure, with your assistance and cooperation, we will make a success for all our attempts.  On 26th April, 2013, we will have our 30th anniversary dinner which marks the climax of our celebration activities.  Let's join together and enjoy a pleasant evening.  All of you here and your parents are welcome.

This year, our students' performance in the Advanced Level Examination is not particularly impressive compared to that of the previous years.  All students fulfilled the University Admission Requirements.  Our school's credit percentage is 59.6% on average while Hong Kong's average is only 25.6%.  Four students attained 3 ‘A's or above.  68.6% of our students were admitted into the most famous Universities in Hong Kong, namely the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Science and Technology.  The results are outstanding compared to Hong Kong's average, though there is still room for improvement.  For the first HKDSE, our students' performance is extremely pleasing. All the subjects got a passing percentage of 100.  88.2% of the students attained an average of Level 4 or above while Hong Kong's average is only 35.8%.  97.1% of our students fulfilled the University Admission Requirement (i.e. 「3322」 or above for the core subjects, plus a 「2」or above in one elective subject), while Hong Kong's average is 36.4%.  83.6% of the students attained Level 4 or above in 5 subjects, while Hong Kong's average is only 17.6%.  90.1% were offered a seat in a university  programme through the JUPAS System.  On average, each student attained 0.43 (Level 5**), 1.11 (Level 5*), 1.55 (Level 5), and 2.80 (Level 4).  As we can see, our students' performance is rather outstanding among all the schools in Hong Kong.  Yet we must not become complacent.  Instead, it is time for evaluation so as to make further progress.  For example, we discover that for university admission, students' performance in the core subjects of English, Chinese, Mathematics and Liberal Studies is given much weight.  This year, a few of our students missed the chance for university admission under the JUPAS system simply because they could not reach Level 3 in the subject of Chinese Language.  More, due to the limited university seats which means keen competition among the candidates, students have to attain an average of at least Level 4 in all subjects in order to guarantee for themselves a place in the university.  So, dear students, start working hard!  There is no time to lose!

Besides the remarkable record in the academic area, we also have excellent performance in the non-academic aspect.  We won numerous awards in different activities and competitions which testify to our students' abilities and tenacity.

      These days, Moral and National Education has become a controversial topic among all walks of life in Hong Kong.  Conflicts begin when the Education Bureau requires Moral and National Education to be introduced this school year in primary schools.  Though there have been consultation and revision with regard to the content materials, no response was ever given to the 「sensitive topics」and the government insists on making it an independent subject. Other than that, it has even sponsored pro-Beijing groups to produce biased national education materials, leading to a debate over Beijing's political intention to brainwash Hong Kong's young generation.  For our school, we have long been implementing Moral and Civic Education.  We teach students through providing them with a variety of learning activities and experiences, being role models and imparting precepts.  Our teaching contents do not shun those sensitive topics like the June Fourth Massacre, the Sichuan Earthquake and the Li Wangyang (李旺陽)Incident, etc.  On the contrary, we let students know the facts, learn to be concerned about family, society, country and global development, and build up their own set of moral standard and proper values.  We believe, with the subjects of Life Education and Liberal Studies (in our formal curriculum), and moral education and morning speech on the National Day (in the non-formal curriculum), we can sufficiently meet the Education Bureau's expectations.  As secondary schools are allowed flexibility in the implementation of Moral and National Education from 2013 to 2016, at the present moment, we will keep a close eye at how things go and stick to our traditional practice of integrating Moral and Civic Education into our curriculum.

      Our school always focuses on moral and intellectual development. As our School Motto proclaims "Grasp Principles, Cultivate Virtues" (明道立德), we provide an all-round education to cultivate in our students a positive attitude towards life and a spirit to serve the community. We also develop the skills and abilities of students for life-long learning, and their potential talent to the full.  The couplet at our school entrance 『潛修道德、學貴融通』 precisely illustrates our school mission.  In the new school year, I hope all of you here understand the importance of hard work.  Everybody should have his clear targets, both long-term and short-term for his academic performance and moral development.  Be fearless of difficulties and work with an unfaltering will.  Strive hard to learn and apply your knowledge.  Resist unhealthy social trends.  Accept constructive opinions from your seniors and be ready to make changes for the better.  I believe you will all be leaders of the future, each possessing good manners, a noble character and profound knowledge.

      30 years' struggle puts Tang Hin among the most prestigious secondary schools in Hong Kong.  Our achievements certainly does not stem from a piece of luck.  It's the fruit of resolve, perseverance and perspiration.  However, we see no reason to relax our efforts here.  We have to pass our virtues on; we have to scale new heights.  We have to deliver the spirit embodied in our 30th anniversary slogan 'Legacy and Innovation' 「三十而立  承傳創新」,

Thank you!

Lau Chi Yuen

Principal

HKTA Tang Hin Memorial Secondary School
