I would not recommend K2 book, which may give the impression that your kid does not read many books other than those taught in classroom... It'd be better to have a book from library or bought in a bookshop together with kids. Of course, after all, it should be your boy's favourite and he can read or talk about it when asked.
As I understand, the boy will be required to read half page if the book is by chapters, or read some more pages if the book is easy. Whether easy or not should not be the key. More importantly, show the principal that your boy loves reading. Of course, if your boy is well prepared for some books that can show his more advanced reading skill, just encourage him to "show off".
Few years ago, I brought my kid to a public library and chose books together (some interesting stories he liked, say if your boy likes elephant, show him a book about it). Then, we decided to read the English one if the principal gave him a free hand because he could manage English reading better. But I have also taught him how to present the content in the Chinese book just in case he was asked to read the Chinese one.
