Dear All,

So happy to find this forum here.  My 12 yrs son is now studying in a Direct subsided school in HK. Academic-wise, just average. Only lucky that he has UK citizenship by decent from his daddy. He will proceed to Grade 7  (= S1 in HK) in the secondary division of the current school. I would consider sending him to UK for state boarding. Does that means he would be applying for Grade 8?

Questions:

1. Should I start searching and applying while he is in Grade 7?

2. As my boy is not particularly strong in academic but very very creative in art, can any of you tell me which type of state boarding school will suit this type?  Or it doesnt really matter.

3. I need to send him to school that are less prone to have bullies because my boy is not very outgoing. Any idea how I could look for such? Sorry that i might sound to 'unrealistic'.

4. For this type of by decent citizens, do we need to pay tax for 3 yrs or live in the UK before enjoying the free education?

5. Have any of you joined a summer boarding programme in 2015 summer to let kids experience UK boarding life yet?  We have with Education First HK.

Please give me some views.

Why don't you let him join GCSE Year 1 (~Grade 9) after 1 or 2 years?

Hi thanks for your reply.

Can you share more how you think my pathway could be?  What's the downside for setting him say Grade 8 on then he could adapt one year first?  Are we free of tuition fees and pay only boarding then? Where can I get confirmation?

If he is already 12 y/o, he should be joining year 9 when he reach 13 instead. So is not suitable for joining year 7 at all.

As long as you have British passport, it is free education in state school (even free if your parents are here on work permit visa). But you will need to look for state boarding school, or contact the local council for any day school recommendations. Or ask school direct

About bullies, although is not a way to do, I will search for school for special needs as they know how to deal with special situation. I am afraid bullies are everywhere. Even Kate Middleton got bullied herself and change school!

For summer school, try a place called Uk2learn they run a preparation programme for students interested in boarding. And they have a summer school near reading this year. I can give you her direct contact if you are interested pm me

1. If he is going to UK in summer 2015, he can try Y8. If he will go there next year (2016), then try to apply for Y9.

4. He can enjoy free education once he arrives at the UK. BUT if he wants to get local rate for uni tuition fee, he must be settled there for at least 3 years before entering uni.

UK schools are quite strict on the age.    They said visa reasons.

sklll:  Thank you so much!! That's good news.  I assume that means we just need to pay boarding fees and make guardian arrangements.

The boy holds British Passport, there is no visa matter to be considered.  And I understand that state schools' admissions are less consider the age, I mean it's not very strict

For home student status (uni), please check the following carefully :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_student_%28United_Kingdom%29

It states that :

The main purpose for the three years' residence in the UKand Islands must not have been to receive full-time education during any partof it, unless the student is a European Union citizen (but not a Britishcitizen) and immediately prior to the three-year period was ordinarily residentin the European Economic Area, Switzerland or qualifying overseas territories(see below).

Students living in the boarding house might not be able to get the home student status.
