Kentville to SFA

Hi all,

My daughter will be graduated in Kentville and is going to study in SFA in the coming September.  I just has a bit worry if she can adapt in SFA which is a English primary school since Kentville is teaching in Chinese.  Can any existing SFA parents advise ??

Re: Kentville to SFA

Hi hot1234,

My son is also a Kent boy and will be in SFA this September.

Have you engage your daughter to any English class in K3?  What is your plan?

Re: Kentville to SFA

Hi ICHUN,

I just let my daughter to take Phonics as Kentville do not have the subject.  But in fact I believe Kentville teachers' English standard is good as my daughter do pronounce the word correctly.

I think my daughter is quite okay for vocab but may find some difficulties as the majority of the teaching media is English.

Re: Kentville to SFA

hot1234,

My son was from Kentville to SFA. He is promoting from P1 to P2 in the coming Sept.

Apart from not teaching phonics, I personally feel that the English standard in Kentville is quite good. My boy's academic results were above average in SFA with straight 'A' for English, Chinese & Maths last semester (don't know the results for the final exam yet), & most importantly, he's very happy with this school.

Re: Kentville to SFA

Hi AJL,

My son will be in SFA this September.  Same as hot1234.  He is also from Kentville.

Any parents' experience that can share when he is in P1?

Re: Kentville to SFA

Ichun,

Maybe I just share some experiences that I can think of from the top of my head:

1) At the beginning of your child's school life at SFA, you'll find that the timetable is quite confusing & there is quite a lot of homework. Don't be panic; actually there is also lots of homework in other schools, not just SFA. You & your child will get used to it after 1-2 months time.

2) English and Maths subjects are taught quicker than some other schools, but don't ever give your kid a feeling that the syllabus is difficult, instead, you can tell your kid that what he learns from school is challenging & interesting. Children's feeling are very much influenced by people surrounding, especially their parents. Show your 'interest' & 'involvement' in his school work, his classmates and his other activities at school and hint him that you 'envy' him for studying in such a good school, have so many good friends and is learning so much more that you when you're young. Even though this might not be true, but it works for me. :  :

3) There are English & Chinese dictations every week - but Kentville's kids are generally used to dictations already, so that's not a problem! There are quite a number of assessments throughout the year, but no marks are counted, and I think this is actually a good way for the children to practice on what they have learned constantly, so that they won't feel too stressful when it comes to the real exams, after they have done so many revisions.

4) Please visit the topic "九月入讀 聖方濟各小學 家長聚會" (I think you have...). There are some useful comments from other mummy whose children are SFA students.

Hope your kid will love SFA.
