flostangraphy,

Do you still say this every year, every season, every month, every week, everyday, every hour, every minute or every second??

As my kid (Chinese) already learned Japanese and her current level already equals to P.5-P.6 Japanese level as school stated. Should we still choose Japanese as third language subject during coming application in Aug 2010?  Hope to ask for the opinions from TSL parents, here are my concerns:-
Pros: Guarantees to have good result through out the years in Jpn subject and having priority to join the Jpn shcool trip if hold (confirmed with teacher), she must have fun and like the subject.
Cons: May be too easy during P1 already, may be lost of interest or concentration during the class. Need to work hard on French and we (mom & kid) don't know at all.
Thank you

During the recent P1 admission seminar, the school has mentioned that the optional Japanese/French subjects will not be counted in the formal school results so you don't need to concern much about the results on these optional subjects.

As your child's Japanese has reached P5/P6 level, I am afraid it is a waste of time to enrol her into the school's Japanese class. This may even discourage her from advancing her Japanese to the next stage.

Isn't it fun for her to learn a new language (French) instead?

By the way, I'm not a parent of existing TSL's student. Maybe existing parents for TSL's students can share their actual experience with you from a different angle.

Please don't kidding. She is a normal kid. I discovered my kid was interested in Jpn and let her learn more. TSL's Jpn level is simple after I made visit in open day and admission talk but their Jpn events are still attractive. My girl was exciting as she heard about Jpn learning in P.1. I may let her continue her Jpn study by myself and tutorial class after school. Let see if she can admit TSL later. And thanks for the opinion from "huba" too.

:) he he he!! i was not kidding when i said i'm impressed!!!
however, i think i did misunderstand you was talking about the p5/p6 japanese level of tsl.... sorry about that....

in our case, my son is french/chinese mix and his french is almost fluent level in conversation. need some help in reading very simple books. can't write any sentence in french yet.
compare with his french cousins, his level is for sure one to 2 years late....
his english level is quite ok k3 level, fluent also with his non chinese friends, read by himself with some very simple text books.... better with images for better understanding.....
however, chinese is real average k3 level.... he was at international stream for n1 and k1, and switched to local stream from k2. so he started writing last year only.
he actually feel quite comfortable to switch either language although he does mix them up from time to time.... (often actually.... ). but then, me and my wife never really push him on the language side. to be honest, i would said he is just k2/k3 level for all the french, english and chinese.... however, i'm not comparing with tsl level.
we decided to put him in the french stream as we want him to feel more comfortable in both french and chinese lessons at school, but will apply him for some extra french and chinese classes apart in the future.

by saying all these, in your case, i do agree with you applying your daugther for 3rd language in japanese, as it's always good to have good academic result at school.
and as you said, since the level at tsl is not very advance anyway, she can always learn french from alliance francais, or some french learning center as leisure!

Thanks for your opinion.
Is your 2nd son going to apply TSL in this Aug (for P.1 in 2011-2012?)

From the information in admission talk last Saturday, after completed the P.6 level of French in TSL Eng-Chi stream, kids are able to order food in French restaurant.. so I don't know whether the level can say as enough or really an elementary level.

Actually my daughter is having Jpn private tutoral by Jpn teacher, and she already understand the basic Hiragana, Katagana, greetings and small amount of vocabularys (that is similar to the P5-P.6 level of TSL Jpn level).

Its fine to make such discussion as u know we need to fill in the option for language fro the very beginning of application. ha ha. Its good to have chance to learn French too if she can admit TSL. By the way, other subjects and teachers are good as I observed during open day and from the presenation in admission talk.

hope to meet u and ur son soon.

nope.... my 2nd son will apply for the P1 2012-2013. i really wonder how many candidate would be next year.....
with my wife we did think for sometime before selecting tsl.
for your information, french international school (lycee francais) is the only school in hong kong which the french level is correct.... but putting the child in a international school, the chinese level will be really low for our expectation.... (the chinese level of tsl french stream is already a bit low for us but still....), the language environment makes tsl really interesting to us! of cause there are a lot of other things....   like the teachers are really caring and patient. and the parents of tsl are very helpful and open mind as well !!!!
we really would like all our 3 kids study here! (yup, the shoes are shinning...)

Hi,

Seeing so many posts from you in TSL forum, it's interesting to know you are not yet a tsl parent.

My case is similar to you but not exactly the same. My son is half Japanese and half Chinese(Hong Kong to be precise).

I have been there on the Open Day and saw the presentation of the students learning Japanese and talked to the teacher. For us, we'll apply TSL for my son but will not consider the Japanese class there. If my son is lucky enough to receive an offer, I would simply enrol him to English/Chinese stream and take French as the third language subject.

Honestly with just two sessions a week, I don't think we can expect much except for arousing interest of our kids with the third language.

Cheers.

And the quality (appearance) of the other P.1 parents seems quite good.
