Yes, for emergencies you can contact the school to reach him. If there is no emergency, the best way is to communicate with your child after school to strengthen your relationship. Let him learn to make mistakes, be forgetful, catch a flu because he didn't put on his jacket, feel worry or insecure. It is part of growing up and we all grew from it.
Actually, it raised a good question: i know kids are not allowed to use the phone in class, but how about during recess and on the school bus? Until what age? I'm the other end of the spectrum: i worry that other kids using the phone would affect my son, especially smart phones with texting, FB & video game functions. We minimize electronics at home, so i do worry about him having much exposures in school. (I wanna know when so that i can introduce it to him first at home, in the correct/controlled manners, before school mates get to him first)
