Language Policy
Students have to communicate in English and PTH from Y2 onwards. For Y1, think they are allowed to talk in Cantonese two days a week according to ECECE. This policy is supposed to apply throughout the school campus - both 'inside the classroom' and 'outside of classroom'.
Far as I know, it works quite well 'inside the classroom' but not very satisfactory 'outside the classroom' during recess. Given that CKY is primarily for local students and most of them coming from Catonese-speaking families, it's gotta be an uphill battle. Some students, esp those in senior forms, tend to talk in Cantonese when teachers are not around - not much due to their incompetency in commanding the Eng language, but simply "rebel without a cause'.
Good news is: for Y1 students, they now stay in a 'secluded' campus in Tin Hau, the language policy has been well observed.
Like it or not, Cantonese remains their mother tongue. While most parents would agree that Eng and PTH are important, I tend not to push my kid too far as to downplay the importance of Cantonese - which remains the language of life in HK.
In my humble opinion, CKY is perhaps one of the few schools in HK who have made much effort in creating a truly bilingual environment for students - and with decent results. If you have a chance to attend the school functions, you would have a better grip of it.

請問所有現役家長,在校內上課及其他時間會否都以英語和普通語溝通?
Thanks. |
