1. Change in daily routine
- rest time, 10hrs or 7 hrs?
- mealtime, right after school at 4pm or 7pm
- playtime before homework done (4-5pm) or after homework done (10-11pm)
- study time (how long to do 4-7 homework + test/dictation + readings + projects + interests etc = 4-5hours)

2. Adjusting to a more disciplined environment
- less tolerance from school than KG
- parents' attitude towards their manners
- following a routine at home during weekdays AND weekends

3. School matters
- much stricter compared with KG
- ECA etc
- constant parents-teacher communications

4. parents' schedule/lifestyle must be changed accordingly to cope with all these changes.

For some smart kids, they can handle all these changes with only a minimum parents' involvement.

I believe that the majority of the kids will be facing some drastic changes in their life. From my observations, most schools offer courses unnecessarily hard for them to study that are too difficult to be handled by a 5-6 yrs old kids by themselves under normal circumstances. Simply putting it this way, parents nowadays are the one who are actually doing the course in terms of all the preparation, etc while the schools just set the framework of the course for them. Therefore, parents' role have been growing more and more important and becoming more dedicated in the process!

I can imagine how busy a primary one student would be. No wonder the number of tutorial classes has been sky rocketing in recent years(hopefully the gov't could use it to bring down the employment rate further, especially for the university school graduates); and the space for children facilities disappearing (hopefully the gov't will soon announce that all playgrounds on HK Isalnd are to be converted into residential use to cool down the property prices!) What a shame of the Gov't:
- lack of vision (except asking people to 'Act Now')
- extremely poor handling on education matters
- lack of policies for the university graduates, except planning ways for them to go north.

Thank 'cacatam' so much for the sharing of your own experience as a primary school teacher. Look like that it was a loss(teacher)-loss(parents)-loss(students) situation for your previous school.  I think your experience would be very useful to a lot of parents in order to let them prepare well in advance for the kids and themselves psychologically.

I guess a lot of schools have attempted to impress the potential applicants by raising the academic standards (unnecessarily at primary school level) in order to promote their social image by totally ignoring and sacrificing what a kid really needs during the early childhood development stage. For working parents, they don't have any choice but to send their kids to tutorial classes right after school at such an early stage (SIGH!!!), creating a wrong impression for kids that this is what studying is really all about.

HK education system has been 'made' as another "shopping mall'. Shut it down if business is not good, appearing to be the most frequent headlines on the local newspapers related to HK education! I can see no more exciting policies from the Gov't on HK education nowadays. Too sad!!!

Thanks LesMis99. I think this song from Les Miserables is what a child really needs and dreams about. But parents nowadays just can't provide the children with this simple gift!

Les Miserables Cast - Castle on a Cloud Lyrics

There is a castle on a cloud,

I like to go there in my sleep,

Aren't any floors for me to sweep,

Not in my castle on a cloud.

There is a room that's full of toys,

There are a hundred boys and girls,

Nobody shouts or talks too loud,

Not in my castle on a cloud.

There is a lady all in white,

Holds me and sings a lullaby,

She's nice to see and she's soft to touch,

She says "Cosette, I love you very much."

I know a place where no one's lost,

I know a place where no one cries,

Crying at all is not allowed,

Not in my castle on a cloud.

Oh help! I think I hear them now,
and I'm nowhere near finished sweeping and
scrubbing and polishing the floor.
Oh, it's her! It's Madame!

........
