Today my daughter brings back the assessment results for English, she is weak in making sentence and spelling.  
So far, her English homework is more about phonics.  I have a feeling that the school is not assessing what the students learned in class.  I wonder if other G1 parents have the same feeling?
I want to send her to 公文式.  Is it good?  Do you have any suggestions?

我小朋友都係spelling同making sentence 好差....我覺得呢兩樣都係冇得一下迫到出嚟.....真係要慢慢.....根本冇可能迫到佢哋幾日識默好多字...

我個勁心散、勁唔聽話....都唔知點迫......

次次寫journal都係我幫佢諗埋咁仔.....真係好擔心!

You have a look of this post and it may help.  Maybe try to ask for the suggestion from that Ms Niara.  I guess she is some kind of private tutor of some WKF's students.  Dont worry, kids will getting used to it and get the impovement.

Try to encourage them read more story book will help on making more complex sentence.

Spelling need to strengthen the phonic skills.  

To help writing better journal, ask them to draft the paragraph with the 6Ws on a piece of paper fist, then ask them to ask themself the question from the 6Ws and then make up a story.

Or simply ask your child to draw a picture before write it out.  Once they have a picture, it helps their imagination.

我小朋友都係呀!好簡單的生字都唔識,又唔肯記住,現在為有同佢睇多啲英文故事書,睇得多,唔多唔少都會有啲字入腦掛

Phonics is very important in G1. It is different from other traditional school. Students English level is not low, eventually their ability of speaking and listening improve well since they like English lessons. On the other hand, I agree that they are weak in writing because my son is G2 and his grammer is not good. But I have confidence that WKF can teach them well in the future.:happy:

from my experience, though may not applied to everybody,  my girl now in G3, when she was at G.1, she need my help in Journal, poem....., but starting from G.2, she is working by her self without my help,  of course, lots of the words are spell wrongly, but the meaning is Ok.  now G.3, she managed to write what she want, but don't expect too much on perfect grammer.
so in G.1, what u mentioned I had experienced, it is Ok, the best way is to read more books.  My daughter did not read much, but she loves to watch disney channel...

100% agreed.  Phonics is good for kids in learning Eng (it's a pity that most traditional Eng teacher in HK don't understand it). Thanks to the school of my son, he learnt phonics fm K2 to P.1.  Now he's P4 already, he needs only 5-10 mins to prepare for Eng dictation, almost getting full score every time. So parents pls be patient, let yr kids learn Phonics first, then making more chance for them to listen, then mkg simple sentences, finally adding grammar knowledge.  They will then be able to handle spelling and writting in Eng.

我個仔仲未讀書,無讀N, 下年先入K1...有DVD 叫 word world, 可能可以幫到spelling。有D動物一起build the word. 而Dword又係個物品既圖樣,包括D動物。 希望幫到你地。

My son is in G5 now and his grammar is getting better and better. WKF stress on learning in context so they teach children grammar through a lot of reading, discussion and creative writing etc. This year, I can see that the school is teaching them more on grammar and children won't find it hard as they already get basic skills through extensive reading. For journal writing, the purpose is just to help them build a good habit of writing and enjoy it, so the teachers will not correct their spelling or grammar. I think this is a very good approach.
