Congratulation. It is a very good international school but the most expensive in Hong Kong.

The pros are many. Since it is the most expensive international school in Hong Kong, it can attract very good teachers to teach, its facility and equipment are always up to date. The faculty student ratio is very low. Given the high tuition fees received, it could offer a truly liberal art education. It offers a very wide curriculum to the students so the students could have a good chance to explore their interests amongst them. Its SAT and AP results are very impressive. Its matriculation list is eye-opening. About 10 to 15% of its graduates are admitted to top 20 US colleges, or UK or HK equivalent colleges.

The cons are common to the international schools in Hong Kong.

There is one more good thing - their counselling department. HKIS has employed one to two clinical psychologist and/or educational psychologist (qualified) in its counselling department to support the students. They also about 3 to 4 learning specialist in each division to support the students who need special care and attention. Its counselling department has 8 counsellor to take care of college application for students (each takes care about 22 to 24 students). It has a big playground, a swimming pool (heated), several tennis court, indoor gynasium. The arrangement is not possible without the high charge on school fee. If you can afford it, it is a money for value school.

As for the bad things, honestly, each international school has the problem of drug abuse, smoking or drinking. There is no exception to HKIS. I have not heard any international school in Hong Kong being free from such problems. The same problems also apply to famous local schools as well.

Thank you again for your information, it's really supportive to me! ^^ However, as I know nowadays most of IS school fees are similar, like Cdnis or Gsis, etc. Btw, you seem knows HKIS much, do you have child study in there? Also any comments of other IS in HK you can share? Cdnis, Cis, Gsis, ESF or ICS, etc.

It is difficult to compare the different IS in Hong Kong because they adopt different education system. All schools you mentioned  - CIS, CDNIS and ESF adopt the IB curriculum. GSIS adopts the British AL until 2016 when it will switch to IB. HKIS adopts the American curriculum.

Each curriculum has its own strong points and weak points. Before we could compare schools, we have to decide what education system you wish your kid to take. If you choose the British or American system, I am afraid that you do not have much choice to compare. Since your kid is to enter G1 in the coming term, you have plenty of time to study different education system and find one suitable for your kid because we will make a long term decision when our kids enter Grade 7 or Grade 8.

Agreed with what you said that difficult to compare the different IS in HK with different education system. In recent years, IBD curriculum comparison welcomed by parents even today most universities of the world, as far as I know the requirements are high, if the children are lively, imaginative and creative, whether you think it should be for IB?
Besides, if you do not mind can tell whether you have children attending  in HKIS? Can you also share pros & cons of US, IB and UK curriculum? How to judge which system suitable for kids?

The US system has the greatest number of students. Each year US has about 3.0 million high school graduates. In case of AL, there are about 700,000 candidates to take the AL examinations. In case of IB, the number of candidate in 2012 is about 110,000.

By judging the number of students in each education system, you will see that the US system is the most popular one. The next is AL and the third is IB.

IB was set up about 45 years ago for the expatriates when it was popular for the large companies to send staff to work outside its own country. In order that their kids could have a standardised education system for college admission purpose, IB was set up. It became popular since the last ten years. Five years ago, the annual candidates (both in May and November) were about 60,000 to 65,000. Since the purpose of IB is to allow the expatriate students to have a portable qualification, IB diploma is recognised by most colleges in the world.

In fact, the AL, AP(US) and IB curriculum are more or less of the same level. So the results are regarded by most of the colleges as equivalent.
You can use your IB results to apply for colleges in UK, USA, Canada, Australia or local colleges. Likewise you can use your AL or AP results to do the similar things.

Some may stress that IB demands creativity, services and other activities because they are formally assessed and the score is incorporated into the overall score of the diploma. In case of the AL and AP, there are no formal assessment on CAS. However, most of the students in AL and AP systems would take up services and activities programme by way of Extracurricular Activities. If they want to put together a strong applications, their commitments the services and activities should be very substantial. In other words, all serious students (no matter which system they belong) should have the similar experience through services and activities.

In summing up, I tend to think that the difference amongst those 3 systems are not much. It boils down to the country in which your kid would take the higher education. If he wants to go to US, I think AP system is more appropriate. If he wants to study in UK, he may choose the AL. If he wants to maintain the flexibility, IB is a good choice.

One last point on the 4,000-word paper required by IB program - in case of US system, the students are required to submit a sophomore research paper with words about 2,500. The juniors are required to submit a junior research paper with words about 3,000. In senior year, they are required to submit a senior project. I think those papers or project have the same learing effect as the TOK paper required by the IB program.

Shootastar,

You knowledge on education system in HK  is very impressive, I guess you must be working in this field.  May I seek your advice?  Besides HKIS, any American system IS has good reputation.  I'm concerned about high school level. My child is finishing primary school (LS) and considering to switch to IS later.  Thanks.

Thank you for your kind words. As a matter of fact, many of my knowledge comes from BK.
In Hong Kong, only 3 schools adopt the American education system - HKIS, American International School and ICS. If you want to compare the 3 schools, you have better to check the website to see the courses offered, their annual SAT average scores, their annual AP scores as well as their school placements. Each school has its pros and cons. Both HKIS and ICS are Christian schools.

The cornerstone of an American liberal art style education is the freedom given to the students to form his own curriculum and the flexibility afforded to students to explore their real interests. That is why there are so many parents who want their kids to receive education from the top US universities or top liberal art colleges.

HKIS is run by the Lutheran Church of USA. Personally I think both ICS and HKIS will respect the religions of others.

The analysis made by the author Richard Cairns, head of Brighton College is most inspiring, especially the last paragraph:

"the best 6th formers are not outstanding because they follow the A-level or the IB, they are outstanding because they have teachers who inspire them intellectually."

This remark also applies to other education system such as US, Canadian or Austrialian.

The head of a school in London agreed with you entirely  :)

How about these remarks in the above article?

"The league tables still only measure assessment thresholds.......... League tables don’t measure a student’s progress against their potential – the measure that is known as ‘value added.’ Perhaps the most successful schools should be those who can demonstrate the most progress achieved by their students."

"To get a realistic picture of any school, you need to read Ofsted and Independent Schools Inspectorate reports but even then how do they measure atmosphere, opportunity, the development of confidence, compassion and creativity as well as memory and competence?"

I can't agree more with the remarks made by David Rose in his essay. As a matter of fact, from an educational point of view, the results of the new IB schools (average 32.8 or 32.9) is most encouraging if we consider the background of the school as the progress achieved by their students (who were not screened for the IB) - which should be great. Although such average IB point may not impress some of the parents.
