St.Joseph is in 彩石里 ,private school not 一條龍. My 2nd son was admitted and he likes this very much. But his brother is studying in TSL now. For me, if they are in the same school, it'll be more convenient for everything such as going to school, sending lunch, .... But if St. Jos is really better than TSL, I don't mind to let my son choose for himself. Please advise.

Have you got an offer from TSL?  Of course go for TSL if I were you.  

1.  Easier to take care 2 kids together.
2.  TSL is not private school but SJ is private school so TSL can get around HKD7,000 subsidy per month per kid from government.
3.   TSL's secondary allocation result is quite good in past 2 years.  Although, not all the students are belonging to band 1, band 2 students still have good English foundation so that they can easily to catch up in secondary school.
4.   TSL has good English environment and has third language to learn.
5.   The school fee of TSL is much cheaper than SJ but they have more resource and money to use.

Nevertheless, if your boy really likes SJ so much so maybe you have to respect your son's feeling that is quite important if he really doesn't like TSL.

My boy failed in the interview (only have 2nd round interview) but he will probably try again. I just want to know which one is better, if SJ is better, we will not apply for TSL again. How about you boy? He  just reserved a place in SJ, any other schools?
Actually I also want to know about the Maths and Chinese standard in TSL. Although my kid is studying there, I really have no idea about the standard compare to the other school.

Hi Perry Ma,

My boy also got an offer from SJ but we declined it as my boy is accepted by St. Margaret Co-ed (SMC) and we all like this school.  My boy also got 2nd interview in TSL but he failed.  You can go to TSL's website to check their recent secondary allocation that I am quite satisfied.  Their English standard is much better than other school and Chinese is weaker than other school.  Maths's standard is OK.  

I know a friend who is teaching in LS.  She said they have around 7-8 boys from TSL  in these recent years and their academic standard is very good apart from Chinese subject although this is not all the cases in TSL.

SJ & TSL - personally I will go for TSL rather than SJ and I guess your son will be easily to get an offer by knocking door as your eldest one is studying there.  Do you think so?

By the way, I want to know how is your eldest one's English and Mandarin since he studied there.  Has he got very good improvement?

辦學團體唔一樣架, 而且聖若瑟書院有其直屬小學, so St. Joseph's Anglo-Chinese Primary School都無special優惠.

My son was just admitted in P.2, before he was in other government school. He found the things taught in that school was too boring and he kept asking to change an English school (for him, he likes english more than chinese) that's why we try to apply the TSL and luckily he was admitted. Actually I don't know whether he got any improvement in English & Mandarin or not. When he was in kindergarten, English and Mandarin was the only media. That's why I can't feel a really big improvement. But honestly, I really admire that the chinese standard is not really good compare to his old school (the old one also teaches in PTH).

I also know a friend's daughter transferred from government school to TSL 2 years ago.  Her situation is similar to your son.  She found the curricumlum of government school is too boring and easy.  

My son is studying in KV where is no Mandarin and NET teacher.  I am the one to teach my son mandarin and English so I hope he can catach up English and Mandarin in primary school as there are at least 8 hours in the schools.  Although I know Chinese standard in SMC or TSL is not as good as other government school.  However, I think English is far more important after the kids go to secondary school and further study in University in HK or abroad.  Therefore, TSL or SMC should have their advantage.  Do you agree with me?

My son is accepted by TSL and SMC for P1 in 2009/10.
Now, he is P1 boy in SMC and love studying.
His english is Fair in class, He will take Flyer exams in Mar. on his request.
I give up TSL due the 3rd language selection for French and Japanese on P1 only and can not change.
Second reason is no secondary school backup, I do not play the selection game again in P5/6.
Third, small group learning is better for primary stage. TSL is 160 in 5 class, SMC is 80 in 3 class.
SMC is 2 teachers in class, ONE is NET, other ONE is ABC or BBC. Therefore, the English envoirement is OK.
Finally, TSL is good school but not 100% of my cup of tea.

SJ is good school but Secondary School is ......
Band 1 school in SJ's NET is less than TSL's NET.

Dear Sampapa,

Before your kid studied in SMC, could he speak Mandarin?

My son can't speak Mandarin at all although he can read some Chinese story books in Mandarin according to phonics.  I am afraid he can't understand what is the teacher talking in the Chinese class.  Do you think it is a problem?

Other than chinese 'PTH-PinYin' homework, all, include modern language, can done himeself and finished within 20~30 min or completed in school.
Due to family is cantonese speaker and never speak Mandarin. My son has a problem of Pinyen in first term. His Mardrin from kg's lesson.
For Chinese-PinYin, it spend 30 min or more in PinYin writing in first term. but now is improved and completed in 15~20 min.
For Spainish & Japenese worksheet can complete in 5 min.
For listening, he is no problem in any language and translate to english in same time after first term.
