My observation is yes and no......
Some elite schools have tradition that kids can identify their excellent area(s) effectively. Not necessary something ground breaking, but something you have self-confidence to excel, then you can enjoy your school life for years and strengthen your self-esteem and self-confidence.
The main theme is identify your own strength(s), not follow/copy others. Like you are playing piano.... how can you compare with a World Champion in the same school. Do something else........ I saw a few kids can excel in other instruments.... Same for sports, academic, other ECA .....
The Prefect System of my son's school is very famous, but the duty hours may clash with his IB classes, he dropped that and elected as a Vice-chairman of another Association. He still can excel in another less prestige association.
The key point is the parents and the kids' expectation, more than the competitive school environment.....
