Tough choice - Sheng Kung Hui vs Victoria

Dear all,

My 30M old son got accepted by both schools in the following class :-

1) SKH Central - am class
2) Victoria (Belcher) - English/Putonghua am class

i've heard many pluses about both schools but still yet to make up my mind.

Not sure if i'm asking for too much, my dream kindergarten should offer :-

1) happy environment + caring staff/teachers
2) outdoor playgroup
2) close proxity to home
3) excellent English level
4) solid track record in primary school admission
5) curriculum that promote both knowledge and skill sets

Cost effectiveness is not the main concern as i'm willing to invest in my son's education.

Would love to hear your view.

Aren't you living in Shatin (read from your profile)? Are you planning to move?
I am living in Shatin too and I just enrolled the Kowloon campus of Victoria for my son. I am impressed by the professionalism of the teachers on the interview day. It may be my first choice but I still haven't got the result! Kind of nervous!

For one reason or the other, my accout did not work this morning and hene i'm using my sister's one to post these messages.

Indeed, i also live in Shatin (Taiwai to be precise) and will be moving to HK Island in Jan/Feb next week.

On Victoria, i agree that the school is very impressive on many metrics like staff, facilities, and etc. One thing holding me back is the profit-driven nature of the school. Also, with the scale they are in, will my son be able to develop a sense of identity & belongings ? You know .. it is like a junior staff working for a big organization.

Perhaps i worry too much. BTW, what other schools did you apply ?

Dear all,

First off, thanks for all the feedback.
Fully agreed with Ckwliu that there is simply no perfect choice. Also, I can’t agree more with Ckwiliu that the final choice will depend on which one is more suitable to my child and how I want my child to grow up like.

Perhaps I know the two schools/my son not well enough; I don’t know which one is more suitable for his character. I do feel my child can cope with either one well given the way he behaves (he’s a rather disciplined and concentrated kid). So, my decision lies on what I want him to be… With that in mind, I picked SKH over Victoria as I feel that my son will grow to be a more caring person there. Why ? as I’ve been in both schools and I think the teachers at SKH are more “real”. It’s the personality traits I placed more importance. I guess there are simply many ways to work out his “English/language” competence off school.

Right or wrong, it’s my choice and I wish the best with yours.

Hello ckwliu,

Travis is going to SHK Central.
You know what, i asked him a couple of times which 'new' school he prefered and he had consistently picked the "basketball" new school (i.e SHK) over the "toy" new school (i.e. Victoria).

Hopefully, he'll enjoy what he and Mom has chosen.

I asked my sons as well after all the interviews which one he liked most and why, you know, sometimes as a parent, I wiould like to hear what is his like and dislike about the schools as well, and this is important in the decision making process... Mine said he really like the big outdoor playground at SKH (Central) with all big Little Tikes car to play around, on the interview day, I realised he enjoyed so much just by playing with the big cars.......

What is the long name for SKH?

Where is Victoria Kowloon campus? Do they have N1 classes?

Hi Ethaniel,

The playground at SHK (Central) is very impressive/attractive esp for kids like my son who is always sick (he attended only 3 days school in Oct, 4 days thus far this month).

I'm thinking to take 2-month leave (of course no pay!) next summer to get him start swimming.

BTW, Is your loved one going to be Travis' schoolmate/classmate ?

My son will be there for the PM class next year, but I still have 2 more interview to do this coming Sats, Kau Yan and Rhenish....I'll see how that goes and I personally think Kau Yan is my 1st choice, their resource is very rich and update....will see this sat how it turns out...

have any of you been to Kau Yan interview on Sat ? I was very impressed with all the teachers and resources, they even have full day starting from K2 which SKH only have half day right ? Amy comments to share ?

I read about this school a while ago and received fair comments from my sister whose 2 daughers are studying in St Pau Co-Ed. So, i did not even lodge in the application with Kau Yan. As a matter of fact, i've originally applied 9 schools (but Kau Yan not in the list) and did not went for interview for 6 of these schools after Travis got accepted in SKH and Victoria. The only one i'm still waiting is ST Paul in Causeway Bay.

BTW, how is your son's performance at Kau Yan's interview ?

my son is accepted for Kau yan's am class. He attended the interview with no preparation, when the teacher asked him what colours were the items, which he always confused and off course, the teacher knew he doesn't know colours... BUt the teacher was very impressed when he was very concentrated in working out one toy--- the very irregular shape of wiring with some cars and trains on from one end to another....i don't know what was it called.... no matter what the teacher asked him to perform, he showed a bit annoyed because the teacher was disturbing him from playing the wiring toy...so, he quickly performed the expected action and quickly get back on his faviourite toy.. Before I go, the teacher said it would be an ideal situation to teach someone like him, he was able to concentrate well on one thing... well, I took it as a compliment and said thank you....

what is your decision..... good luck in SPC....

Dear Ethaniel,

Glad that your boy has a high degree of concentration. My experience is that it helps a lot at both work/school if one can focus.
While i'll still apply and attend SPC interview, not sure if i will send Travis there if he got accepted. At the end of day, the class at SPC is dominated by girls.

Unless something drastic happens in coming months, looks like Travis will be settled with SKH.
At the same time, there is a slim probability that our family will move to Kln Tong as i work there. If so, Travis will choose either Kenville or St. Catherine (not sure if you have heard these 2 schools).
