He also a mix, my husband is not Chinese so we speak mostly in English at home, however, i do talk to him in Cantonese. my son is still not very willing to speak in Cantonese but he is getting better since school started because they have Cantonese and mandarin classes.
My son only watches English speaking TV,cartoons and movies. Not because he choose to but because there arent a lot of good cantonese cartoons out there for him to watch.. which is a real shame...
It really depends what your target is for your child's primary education, we are aiming for ESF so we arent too worry about how good his Cantonese or Mandarin are.
maybe you can strike a balance in using Cantonese and English.. alternate the language every hour or so... and if you feel he talking too much in a certain language then change back to the other one. but i am not to worry about that because they are still young and they are very adaptive. so i dont think you have to worry about your child's Box Hill life.
