My younger daughter is a 港青 in badminton.

I also have to struggle between whether she has to focus on her study and pursue her talent in badminton. The really is that only a very few can handle both. If she has to excel in the badminton field, she has to receive training for 6 days a week, each time for 3-4 hours. In this situation, hoe can she perform well in her study(if I target the 3 most prestigious universities in HK) ? So the coach always pushes me to choose either  pursue "study" or "badminton". For me, of course "study" is the priority but my daughter is very naive, she wants to handle both. However, she is not the one with good discipline and determination to manage these two challenge tasks.

Thanks for your sharing about yours and your daughter's struggle, which pretty unique in HK, and most parents only focus on study alone, including me. I will consider your daughter just like a kid taking a part time job and continue studying, strong stamina and determination.
In my son's schools have many this type of examples, some students struggle between study and sports, so some of them, their public exam results are not flying color. Most outsiders just blamed the school utilized those kids for award winners only, but the boys may love to excel in sports instead of study.

Can her school and the HKSI / HKBA support her study in parallel of her badminton career? Like sponsored tutoring, special breaks for exam or tests.....

Having said that, if she is really good in Badminton, she can check which University is very good in Badminton, they are more than happy to take her with much lower admission grades through sports stream. I am not very sure for Big 3. You can see most universities take the average of admission grades by excluding sports and principal nomination streams, she can take advantage of this arrangement.

Good luck.

Dream and Passion can drive people to make great things.

I am glad that your daughter is so passionate about the sport she loves so much. Just let her fly.

If you can manage to spare time in her study, she could be admitted by the 3 prestigious colleges in Hong Kong so long as she could maintain a "reasonable" academic standard.

Even if she could not and wants to focus on badminton, just let her do it. She can always come back to colleges after her retirement from badminton, The experience of competition in national or international level is invaluable. Several years of delay in study in exchange for a dream is worthwhile. After all, a few years is only a small part of the whole life. She will regret for several ten years (which is the greatest part of the whole life) if she could not do it.

I can quote you an example.

My daughter had a classmate who was one year senior than her at high school. He was the Hong Kong inter-school table tennis champion. He needed to do substantial practice everyday at Shatin. He managed to maintain a reasonable academic standard. He was given a scholarship in a boarding school in UK. He also represented that boarding school in table tennis competition amongst schools in UK. He was also a champion in his age group. He was admitted to a very prestigious college in London to study Biological Science. Because of his passion in his sport, he was successful in persuading one of the local medical schools to admit him to study medicine.
