RC vs ESF

ESF :

Re: RC vs ESF

Chunky,

As I know, there is one more major difference between RC and ESF - cirriculum:

RC - IB program from year 1 to 13, i.e. PYP, MYP and IBD

ESF - UK cirriculum from year 1 to 11 (or PYP in primary and IGCSE in secondary), IBD from year 12-13

For western kids, most of them prefer ESF naturally as Chinese is not a must for them.

For Chinese, RC seems more suitable?

Re: RC vs ESF

I just viewed the ESF website and found that the forum has disappeared.  I used to view parents' opinons and updated news from the forum before.  It's a pity that it cannot be found anymore.  Can anyone kindly advise what happened?

Re: RC vs ESF

GOOD。

Chunky,

More information for you :

ESF 每班人數 max 30 人 , not 30+ 人.

KJS 好快都會行 IB ,到時中文堂會加到每天到有,校舍明年重建.

Re: RC vs ESF

Re: RC vs ESF

I talked with Mr Yu, Head of Chinese of RC, after the curriculum night.  He told me that even ESF schools eventually switched to IB, they would only treat Chinese as foreign language, like French.  However, RC treats Chinese as a second language and thus definitely emphasizes more on Chinese than other ESF schools.

Of course, things may change as time passes by because educational service is also market driven.  You can tell from ESF's "Way Forward" Newsletter that ESF also needs to have some changes to survive (e.g. switching to IB and adding Chinese) in view of the potential cut of subvention.

If the Chinese standard/exposure is not your concern (at least at the moment), ESF schools may be a right choice as they have proven records of success (public exam results).  However, if you would like to your children to have more exposure to Chinese, you may consider putting them to RC.

Re: RC vs ESF

Thanks.

I do intend to let my child learn more Chinese in primary school. However, does RC offer French (or German, Spanish, etc) in secondary school?

I did not go but a friend went to their introductory night last month, said that she might have heard Mr Kenny say that they might be (might be!) offering French and Spanish in the future. Has any parent heard more of this from the school.

They did say so but they did not seem to have any concrete plan yet.

Re: RC vs ESF

I just call RC a few days ago and asking if they offer modern language(such as French, Spanish, Latin....) for secondary section or not.  The admission officier can't give certainly answer and promise to forward my question to the head of curriculum who will respond to me directly.  I still waiting for their respondence.

Re: RC vs ESF

Dear Chunky,

I suggest you to apply both ESF and RC. Your choice will only be required once BOTH schools offer you a place.

Please note that the entry competition for ESF school is extreme keen. It's not easy to get a place. On the other hand, RC seems much easier.

From the simple supply and demand rules, ESF schools are more popular. Whether ESF schools are better, should be highly depends on how you intreprete their popularity.

Re: RC vs ESF

From my experience last year, I applied both but was required to make a choice before the interview was granted.  Not sure about the arrangement of this year.

Can you tell me the interview arrangement last year? What did you choose?

Thanks!

Re: RC vs ESF

I chose RC.  The interview last year was an individual interview.  Parents attended the interview conducted by one teacher with the child for the first 10 minutes.  Parents then came out to fill in a questionnaire while the child continued the interview for another 10 - 15 minutes.  I overheard that RC would conduct group interview this year.

Re: RC vs ESF

Can you share why you chose RC?

My friend chose Shatin Junior simply because she lives close to the school.

Re: RC vs ESF

The major reason was that RC claimed in her website they would spend 20% in Chinese (Putonghua & Standard Chinese which I interrupted as Traditional Chinese).  You may wish to note that P1 students (Chinese Native Language groups) currently have about 4 hours Chinese weekly (Chinese class in 4 days conveyed in Putonghua plus the use local K3 books in Traditional Chinese as well as the use of Chinese in some of the Unit of Enquiry classes).  However, the Head of Chinese informed the parents during the curriculum night that RC preferred Simplified Chinese to Traditional.  I am not sure whether they would switch to Simplified Chinese books in higher forms.

The second reason was that I believed that Mr Peter Kenny, the Principle, could help RC to implement the IB programs smoothly with his expertise in this field.

The third reason was that I believe that my son was unlikely to get an interview from SJS because he was a Cat 3 child not attending ESF Kindergarten and without siblings in ESF schools.  It turned out to be true because I knew no one of my case got an interview.  Having said that, SJS had never been my first choice.  Otherwise, I would have put my son to ESF Kindergarten TY at the very beginning.

However, ESF schools would have quite significant changes in the coming years, including the switch to IB and addition of Chinese.  You may refer to ESF's "Way Forward" for more information.  Therefore, the difference between RC and SJS last year may not be still valid this year and the years to come.

Re: RC vs ESF

The answer is very simple. If Brent choosed Satin Junior, his kid even might not have the chance of attending the interview because of the long application queue if his kid belonged to the lowest interview priority.

The choice between RC vs ESF is so simple. No one (or almost) will choose RC if one can get the offer from ESF.

The reasons are so simple:
- For ESF schools, lower school fee and proven track records

- For RC, higher school fee and no track record

Besides, I really doubt the quality of RC as it is run by ESF Educational Services Ltd but not by the English Schools Foundation.  You may notice that all the current ESF kindergartens are also run by ESF Educational Services Ltd. but the quality are far below those real international kindergartens at this moment. The experience as well as the resources available are also not sufficient because of the requirments of self-financing.

It really takes time to build up a proven education system including both hardware and software.
