Personally, I will call it covering letter.

My son's attachment for application has two reference letters:
1. Principal;
2. Local Univeristy Professor(my son as volunteer in one of his research project);

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

其實covering　ｌｅｔｔｅｒ　的中文點解呢？中文名稱又是什麼呢？

I use covering letter as I will summarise my son's background and highlight the strengths according to the portfolio and supporting evidence. Let the reviewer has a quick overview of my son before get into details.

I am not sure about the Chinese translation. Should be the same as job application, a covering letter plus the resume.

to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
