If your kid is studying in VSA, you would need to follow up with his homework closely.  Speaking Cantonese at home or in the school (during recess only) is not a problem.  But you need to know how to guide him at home.  Being shy at the beginning is also not a problem, the students will have courage to speak up at higher grades.

Dear cherubic, thank you for your sharing.  Then could you please give me some solid examples how to guide the homework?  I would like to understand VSA more.  And what do you think on VSA, and their secondary section in the future?  Many thanks.

Every week, student will receive a homework grid.  For lower grade, you need to guide them how to allocate the time for finishing those homework within that particular week.  Your input is not necessary for writing exercise and the like.  For those requiring a bit of research, you need to guide them how to do it.  Writing and expressing opinion is frequently required.  Your input is required if your kid has problem in doing this.  Homework load from Y1 to Y3 is very reasonable but starting from Y4, and depending on the teacher, it may be quite heavy.  Starting from Y1, you need to do guided reading with your kid every day, both Chinese and English.

With regard to their secondary, we are still waiting for more IB results for comparison.

It depends on with whom you are comparing VSA's students.  Year 3 to year 5 students of VSA attended the International School Assessment in Feb this year.  The assessment covered Math, English reading and English writing.  The results of all grades were above world average.  All students attended the assessment and there was no driling before the assessment.  So the assessment should represent the real performance of our students.

But if you compare VSA's Math with local stream students, you may be disappointed.  We don't have the kind of drilling that most local schools will use.  Some parents would therefore arrange the kids to do exercies at home.  For English, the school encourages children to express themselves and write a lot.  Grammar and tense are not the focus and again we don't have drilling.  The school believes that children can acquire English via extensive reading.  I was told that some students from local schools whose report cards showed that they had high marks in English failed VSA's interview because those students cannot write (they were given a picture or a topic and were asked to write the passage, just like the International School Assessment).

VSA is a IB school.  Broadly one can say IB is skill based.  The school trains the students to have the ability to research, to analyse and to present the findings.  The approach is different from the local stream.  Whether you like VSA's approach or not depends on what you expect.
