I think the waiting time is part of the test - to see if the kid is disciplined & patient enough to sit on their own reading without moving around & causing a disturbance.
In the 2nd interview, the headmistress talked only to the parents for the entire time & I must say it isn't easy for any kid to just sit there for that length of time without seeking attention (bringing a book for them to read would be my advice).
This kind of discipline cannot be taught in interview classes & has to be 'drilled' by parents on a daily basis over time.
Don't forget that the kids are observed the entire time they are inside - the so called 'pre-selection' may include marks given during such observation period!
(1) Good K2 school report esp if from reputable kindergarten
(2) polite and ready to learn - therefore bowing and addressing the principal are "must do", listen before answering is also important
(3) good learning ability esp good memory - memory games and matching games are must
(4) basic storytelling technique/ skill - able to retell a long story (ie memory and organisation skills) + answer questions
(5) self confidence - look into the eye and answer confidently in full sentences, elaborate and explain if necessary

the interview question is very very simple....don't make it very complicated
my kid told me that the principle told a story, and the principle asked some question about the story....
but finally the principle chose the kid.......as the 2nd interviewed parents told me that the principle loved quiet kid and love to read and very patient.......so active kid (she doesnt like)
principle said "quiet one meant who can stay here to listen what the teacher taught...and they can absorb ...."
