I think it is a combination of the pay, the workload and the pressure. You can only really deal with all these negatives if one is passionate about teaching. Looks like we have 5 out of 1000 with passion and desire to be teachers

I thought EDB already have scheme for NET to teach in LS. Of course, not realistic to be for every student.

香港老師的熱誠，也要有尊嚴和尊重才可長久支撐的。其實薪金不算低，其他工種也有工時長和壓力等情況，偏是這些人對人的工作，講錢是非常巿懀，講心又無法跟家長和學生有經常性互動交流，幾乎是毫無或甚少成就感呢！這樣的生活，容易讓人麻木和自我形象低落，簡直有點像'厭惡性行業'了。
好人好姐，點會想去當老師？

我女兒的英文遠勝當年的我。

一次，女兒的一個同學看見她的雙親，用英文與她whatsapp，感到很奇怪，因為大部分同學都沒有這樣的父母。

現今大學普及率(degree course) 是二十多年前的幾倍，當年只有不到8%的中學生可讀degree, 現在大學生英文平均水準下降也不感奇怪。但相信整體中學生的英文水準應是比當年中學生有所提升。

可能以最top 的10% 中學生比較才有意思。

Hi Eviepa,

Your daughter is an exceptional case.  Just like my daughter there is nobody writing her in Chinese except those friends of HK Sports Team members from domestic school, and me dropping her notes in Chinese on purpose.

Here many are muddled and puzzled what the average English standard was in old time.  Let me be a stereotyped profile for reference.  I took HKCEE in 1979 with English grading E, closed to fail.  And no further English education.  However, I have many foreigner friends and read at least 30 English adult books a year happily.  So I guess my English is ok in communications. Of course,  I must confess that my writing is with many grammar and prepositional phrase mistakes, and my pronunciation is terrible.

I heard that the passed grading in DSE (equivalent to HKAL form 7) is level 2, or level 3.  I would assume this level should be much higher than the old HKCEE grading E, right? But the reality seems not the way it's supposed to be when I meet young students in the community.

I think there is one more factor that needs to be considered - the increased % of HK children in IS or studying abroad

除开IS 和海外长大的学生,尖端的水平上升的原因和关键,可能是:

1) 中产家庭增多
2)父母是专才人士增多
3) 社交圈子是华洋混杂十分普遍

新一代的英文水平有否下降?
新一代? 80後, 90後, 千禧後?
比較對象: 50後, 60後, 70後, 80後?

好多人的英文在工作後不自覺的進步, 中學生多佐, 大學生仲多佐好多倍, 所以覺得新一代的英文水平下降了.

我說比較中學畢業生的英文水平也有不當, 我相信50後的中學畢業生的英文好過60後, 60後好過70後. 比例上50後唔係好多人可以中學畢業, 60後多D, 70後更多. 好多50後和有的60後中學生都係聽英文歌大, 所以英文可能較好.

我同意尖端的水平上升. 但普通的下降只因比例上中學生和大學生多了, 又或者一部份是母語教學所導致. 直資和微調後, 90後和千禧後的英文水平可能較70後, 80後, 甚至50後, 60後好. 好多EK的家長都覺得自己子女的英文比自己當年的好 (包括eviepa 和我). 相信annie40, ANChan和好些家長都係.
