Wondering if your little ones have started in Kellet reception or not? Just wondering if you have any comments on the school. Seems asians would be the minority but I guess it should not be an issue.

Yes very few Asians. In a class of 22 there are only 2 Chinese and by this I mean 華人 not mainlanders. So local HKers are included. You will mainly be working with British/Australian/American families in school events but since both my husband and I studied abroad since teenage years, we have no problem with this. Kids love the school.
As many forum contributors have already rightly pointed out, the only set back is that Chinese is minimal here. So we have hired a private tutor to supplement the Chinese curriculum. Since both of my kids attended local kindergarten and already started writing Chinese characters (no kidding, they are difficult!! K2 is writing 雷電 and 媽媽 and 飛鳥!! ) before starting at Kellett, so far their Chinese seem to be fine. But again, perhaps my expectation is not that high to begin with.

Thanks for your comments! Yes seldom see Chinese faces indeed when I browse through their website/fb. In fact, am
not really concerned with mingling with expats (as I have been working  alongside many of them anyway)- just not sure if being the minority will be sort of discriminated against. Hahah perhaps I am thinking too much. Wow it's really incredible that K2 students need to write such complicated characters!!! Btw did your little one need to go through an interview to get into Kellet? If going to a local kindy (perhaps like Victoria or think), would it be sufficient to go through the interview?

No they didn't have to go through an interview. Perhaps it's because I got my kids' after school English coaching centre to also fill in a reference form so they got comfortable with my kids' English? Regarding discrimination, haven't heard any complaint from my kids but given their age I doubt they know what it is yet. No complaint of being bullied or ostracised. At the parent level, to be very honest with you, I think it's very similar to what you see in your work place if you also work with expats. Some have lived in HK for many years and never bother to venture out of the HK Island further than TST. And some may have yum cha with their family every week and are able to use chopsticks like a native HKer and eager to learn some Cantonese. Most parents are genuinely nice to you but in very rare occasions I do encounter parents who talk to you when they have to but you can see the distain in their face. Fine by me. I will just stay away from them. I will not and there is no need for me to please them.

Thanks indeed for your honest comments. Very useful to get a peek into what it may be like joining kellet! What you said is indeed Very similar to my experience with expats in HK (some of them really don't venture outside HK island  while some are very localised). Good to know that most parents are nice. Re the curriculum, is reception activity based and how's the discipline of the children? Many thanks again for any insights/comments!

Regarding discipline, I would say it is stricter than schools following the US curriculum (I don't have first hand experience as a parent of a US-style school and I'm only speaking from what I saw in school visits) but not as strict as a local school (obviously!). Most students are very well behaved. For the curriculum, it is play based for the lower preparatory years and no homework until P2 (if a few worksheets can be called homework).

You can call/email admission to find out but your position on the list will fluctuate, as there may be people who apply later than you but may occupy a position higher than yours if they have corporate debenture/sibling priority etc.

Thanks for the sharing again! Good to know. I quite like Kellet personally - just finger crossed to see if we may stand a chance when my boy reaches 4. We applied when he's 2 to 3 months old. Anyway we are now facing a more imminent problem of securing a kindy first. Still not sure if we shoudl put him in an English one (like anfield) or bilingual ones like Kingston/Vic.

Really? Do you know if your source is reliable? Just been told that Kellet is indeed very British - hence easier to adapt to U.K. Schools if I send my little one to boarding school when he has reached year 9 or 10. Academically would it be stronger than esf? Seems it is not academically strong as CIS or GSIS I guess.
