關於學樂器
Here is some information for parents who want to pick a musical instrument for their daughters other than the piano. I think the school has fee-based training classes for all of these instruments (instructors are from outside).
Strings 弦樂:
- violin 小提琴 (relatively difficult and requires more time and parents' involvement)
- viola 中提琴 (easier than violin and less competition to get into orchestras because few choose it, but not many solo chances)
- cello 大提琴 (the one Ma Yo Yo plays; it is important in orchestras and has solo chances too; but is heavier to carry around)
- double bass 低音大提琴 (this is the biggest one and probably easiest; few students choose this one but it's important in an orchestra too and perhaps not so much time is needed to practice, because you may not even need one at home in the first few years.)
Woodwind 木管樂: (all instruments require lots of air and the children will find it hard in the beginning)
- clarinet 單簧管 (the sound is more round and deep)
- oboe 雙簧管 (sounds like a duckling, my daugther said)
- bassoon 巴松管 (a very long instrument, as tall as a P.4 girl...in last week's HYPS school concert in Ko Shan Theatre, the teacher introduced this instrument to the students)
- flute 長笛 (a good flute player can also play the piccolo 短笛 which is sometimes needed in an orchestra)
Brass 銅管樂: (all instruments require lots of air and the children will find it hard in the beginning; some bigger instruments are very heavy)
- horn 圓號法國號
- trumpet 小號
- tuba 大號
- euphonium 中音號
- trombone 長號伸縮號
- Saxophone 色士風 (rather limited because it is only used in the band, but not in orchestras. It's for jazz and not really for classical music.)
Percussion 敲擊樂 and Timpani 定音鼓 (this section is perhaps the most important, because the band and all the orchestras and the percussion team need them.)
Our conductor Mr Poon donated a very beautiful harp 豎琴 to HYPS last year (more than HK$100,000!!) I'm not sure if they'll have a class on this instrument in the next school year.
You can take your daughter to a symphony orchestra concert in the Cultural Centre. If you sit in the balcony (upper level), then you'll have a clear view of all the instruments and your daughter can pick what she likes.
You can also ask the music teacher to recommend an instrument for your daughter.
HYPS has these bands and orchestras
- Band 管樂隊 (won 1st prize in the music festival in 2005, 2006 and 2007 and so the school can keep the trophy!! I heard that no other primary schools has won 3 years in a row before.)
- Strings Orchestra 弦樂團
- Symphony Orchestra 管弦樂團 (formed by members of the Band and Strings Orchestra; got 2nd prize in 2007 Schools Music Festival)
- Percussion Band 敲擊樂隊 (got 2nd prize in 2007 Schools Music Festival)
Therefore 2007 has been a very fruitful year for HYPS because our teams either got 1st or 2nd prizes.
