Just want to share with you all.

My son is the kind that always argues and doesn't like to do what you ask him to do.  I manage to make him feel that reading books is a privilege and reward.  I bring him to bookstore and let him choose his collection only if he behaves or work hard during test or exam.

And now, he even uses his pocket money to buy books thinking that this is a special privilege.

Also, his school allocates a reading time everyday. All students and teachers will read books  during that session.  They always peep what the others are reading and of course, discuss and share.

My mistake.  I ought to say ORT Stage 8.

The pink series of the Oxford Story books contain Kidnappers, The flying carpet, Green Island, Storm Castle, Superdog and Litter Queen.  Obviously these come from ORT Stages 8 and 9.  As advised by wisekid, there are insufficient books under the Oxford story book series.

Hi cherubic,

Is ORT level 8 equivalent to ORT stage 8?

Yes, I agree.  I will buy more books from ORT levels 7 to 8.  My son can read (less than 2 difficult words in a page) and understand the pink series (equivalent to level 8 of ORT) now.

Apart from t ...

Of course it would be much better if we can use English to communicate with our kids during reading the English books.

However, if we are not native English speaking, we had better not to use Englis ...

Magic school bus series (with different levels) are about some science/knowledge subjects, may not suitable for N1 to K2. The DVDs are related to the books and let young readers more easier to understand the science theories (not only the vocab or reading skill)...eg 地心吸力, 血小板工用. 當然我都鼓勵小朋友先睇書,後再參看影碟.

In fact those books with DVD or CD are only suitable for those very young kids before they start reading the words by themselves or when they are still at a very low reading level, e.g. for nursery, K ...

.....After completing the "assignment", I will let my boy do anything he likes and he will usually read various types of books (mainly non-fictions) choosen by himself.

HAHA! My girl also likes to choose non-fiction books. And like most kids, she loves to read something about "knowledge"...then keep asking you silly questions!!
Btw, "Magic school bus" is also very interesting, and it provides DVD too.

Apart from these books, I will ask him to read the Ladybird "Key Word" series.  The vocab of these series is carefully controlled.  My plan is to let him familiar with the most frequent used words.

Yes, safarimama has mentioned that. For higher levels of the OST, they were exactly the same as similar titles of the ORT.

However, within a level of OST may contain books from more than one level of ...

I checked the pink series of Oxford Story books at home last night.  They are indeed the same as Level 8 of Oxford Reading Tree, and past tense is used all along.  I think Oxford Story books only publishes part of the books under ORT.

thank you.

因為我曾聽過有人說當看英文書時不要講中文, 這樣只會令小朋友將中文翻譯為英文, 不是好事.

所以我才有這樣的疑慮

tesnes 真係一件難事, 因為中文是沒有這回事的.

I also agree ORT is better than OST. But not all OST levels are written in present tense. The 4th level of OST (orange colour) is written in past tense. My girl's kindy is using OST level 4 now.
