I agree that JMC can train kids good on musical sence that not all private teaching can do.  But not good on reading notes and fingers posture, that is very important, for long term on learning piano and muisc.

To my opinion, kids about 3.9 yrs should go JMC first.  Around studying book 2, I would recommend to start 1-to-1 private teaching as well.

If you start 1-to-1 private teaching after JMC, then the kid is almost 6 yrs, I think the kid need to take long time to overcome translating do-re-me to C-D-E.  Just like younger kid can learn more different languages easier than the elder.

All the above is just my opinion sharing that is also my experience from my son's music learning.
