For primary years, I think the most important subjects are Chinese language, English language and Maths.  Once the kid has built a good foundation in these subject, he/ she can easily to proceed with the secondary years.  So, the main considerations are whether the school can teach these subjects in a good way regardless private, IB or otherwise.
