I totally agree. I have stopped asking my kid doing routine algebra.  In fact I don't know how to teach my kid as he is in K2 and he knows +,-,x,/,fraction, decimal and negative numbers. So I don't think he is suitable to 公文的教育.

For those with gifted in Maths, they learn by themselves and they should be challenged with more advanced problem. Nevertheless I don't know what advanced problems suitable for him.

其實我很少教他 (除了除數和分數),絕大多數是他自學. 好似最近–星期, 他問我2-5 是多少? 我對他說這個你不會懂, 他說２不夠減5, 答案是-3.

Algebra 是很淺, 5x=15, x = ?
Polynominal?! 不要嚇我吧, he is just 4 year 9 months old only. 有冇奥數班適合他上?

So, are you teaching him high school maths now? If he can already master the 4 operation of fraction/decimal, you are strongly suggested to do so.

In HK there is no "real" gifted school so what I am going to choose are "through-train" primary schools. I know very little school interview will assessed math skills, so I just add his IQ assessment sheet in the application form. Helpful or not, yet to find out.

For my son's case (K3 now), he just finishes the class work very fast, and maybe sometimes ask "50+30-7" or negative number arithmetic to his teacher. Not too sure he feels bored or not but the teacher hasn't complained. Sometimes he says "the work is very easy".
