小LEGO老豆,

Hm ...  Let's make more examples.  Elephant?  Giraffe?  Xylophone?  Ice-cream?  ... Those are what I could find from a kid's board book in the market.

Re: **新聞透視**

I have a friend, both him & his wife only finished Form 3.     They are not as lucky as you.    They have to quit the school and earn for living.    I'm proud of them because they try to learn from now because they have a 4 years old daughter.

Re: **新聞透視**

Furbabies,

I totally agreed.  However, my gril who is 3.5 yrs. old.  she can only pronounce the vocabs when she see the pictures but unable to spell them or recognize them from the spelling. (exactly your comment, except Igloo)

I agree to provide our kids an english enviorment to teach them english but not force them to dictate every single words in this pre-school stage.

HuiTung,

Yeah.  Astronaut should be heated.  Caterpillar is a common bug.  Ostrich is even in supermarket now.  Quilt, we cover everday.  Igloo might be difficult and uncommon.

Re: **新聞透視**

Furbabies,

I totally agreed.
Actually, we can find these "difficult words" easily from the newspapers, story books, Disney World English, when someone who are intersted to watch National Geographic, you will found that these  "difficult words" are quite common.

Re: **新聞透視**

I think it's fine that kindergarten students don't know these 5 specific words.  As long as they are learning some words that they encounter causually on a daily basis, that's fine.  They are just starting their academic life.

But I am very worried that our college students, our Legco Councillors and 39 out of 40 people in the business district don't know any of these words.

Re: **新聞透視**

Furbabies,

let me make some clarifications.  the statement was 39 out of 40 don't know [size=xx-large]all five words (both pronounciation and Chinese meaning), they may know 3 or 4 out of the 5, only the Singaporean got full marks

I totally agree with you, that's why I said I am quite worried about the English standard of our kids after reading the P.3 assessment report.  Can't count on the current education system, have to rely on ourselves

Re: **新聞透視**

I think we should not focus on these english words. The program also mentioned that children also forgot their chinese sentences right after 24 hours. Absolutely, there is no harm for our children to know these "difficult words" if they are not under the pressure. However, I don't think it will be the case. All parents are competing to each other. Creative ideas cannot be measured but number of words, number of sentences, or their calculation speed are able to be measured. That is why we have "high score but low EQ" childrens. Please be reminded that knowledge is not equal to happiness. We need both of them.
