學普通話是必需呢?

The school usually separate PTH lesson and Chinese lesson (some use cantonese and some use PTH for teaching Chinese).

Which subject your son feel difficult, PTH class or Chinese class (using Cantonese of PTH as medium of instruction)?

I know some kids may have difficulties learning Chinese using PTH, some teachers may accommodate that. Usually PTH lessons are  easier to handle than Chinese lessons (if teach in PTH), Chinese lesson has more learning expectations for students, thus some students, especailly in P1, quite difficult to adjust if they are  not coming from PTH speaking families or coming from kider without PTH training.

For those schools really care about diversities of children, they will give time for P1 to adjust to the language environment......e.g. P1 use Cantonese, then P2 -P6 use PTH in teaching Chinese.

If you really find it difficult, talk to other parents in your school seeing how they handle this issue, or talk teachers if they are helpful or really care about diversities among children. If they don't care or if the school is not really helpful, find a helpful school that best fit your child's need.

Meaningless to communicate with schools without any genuine wish to accommodate diversities among children. They will not care about your specific kid, but the general goals of school.

Sorry, handicapped in Chinese typing, has to use English to respond (old fashioned)...

Personal opinion:

1) It's nonsense to ask P1 kids to 默拼音, more reasonable when they are older, and after P1 adjustment

2) Not all kids will benefit from 拼音, if this is really difficult for your kid, don't compare with others, some kids will have difficulties and some kids are brilliant in 拼音, and both may have good results in language development when they grow up.

Take it easy and use the best ways that suit your kid's learning pattern and pace..but still keep on learning the foundations..

you are welcome..

My son: Brilliant in PTH and English phonics, but his speaking PTH is not that "original", he's a theory person,  but practically he cannot speak beautiful PTH. Exam or dictation, can do well in all kinds of PTH spelling.

My daughter, it is extremely difficult for her to memorize all PTH spelling, but she can speak beautiful PTH and read the books with PTH, but theorietically, she is really weak. I expect exam and test will fail in all spelling.

So, you have to believe in God, that's really fair, each has their strengths, we appreciate that strengths and differences.
