I had dinner with my best friend, Mary (at / in) the Shatin Hotel.

Which one is correct?  It seems two words are OK, right?

Thanks,

我會用"in", 因沒有specific指邊間restaurant, 即一間hotel可能有好幾間restaurants, 所以用"in".

不過我都唔知自己岩唔岩 !

你咁解釋又有道理喎,因為又冇指定係邊一間食店!

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, "in" is inside a place and "at" is used to show an exact position or particular place. So I think both are correct but the the article "the" should be omitted.
i.e. I had dinner with my best friend, Mary, (at/in) Shatin Hotel.

阿囡話: AT

因為:

因為這是一幢房屋,而英文老師說房屋要用at

多謝咁多位媽咪的回覆,我女女最後用左"at",但老師話佢錯,應該係"in"喎!

A very meaningful question! I asked my niece who grows up in Canada and is studying how to teach Eng as a 2nd language.

1. "at" is correct, "in" isn't.  Unless you use something like "I had dinner with my best friend Mary in the restaurant at the Shatin Hotel."
- "in" is the specific location (the restaurant - but which one?)
- "at" is the general location (the Shatin Hotel restaurant!)

2. "the" is necessary because you're talking about a particular (aka specific) place. If you wanted to be non-specific, you would say "I had dinner with my best friend Mary at a hotel."
To elaborate, say you had dinner with your family at Maxim.  You would say "I had dinner with my family at Maxim." Your friend might ask "Oh, which one?" And you would say "I had dinner with my family at the Maxim in North Point."
And another example:
A: "I had lunch with my mom yesterday at a fast food restaurant."
B: "I love fast food! Which one did you go to?"
A: "We had lunch at Fairwood." (general)
B: "You didn't go far did you?"
A: "No, we didn't.  We went to the Fairwood downstairs." (specific)

I had dinner with my best friend, Mary (at / in) the Shatin Hotel.
______________

是不是要討論 在這個句子裡, Shatin 到底是當做一間酒店的名稱, 還是當為地區名稱來用?
捨得 捨得 先捨而後得 不是不捨得, 而是捨不得

agree x 2

我同阿仔都係覺得用at...."at" a smaller place, "in" is for a bigger place...
