Playgroup of Tutor Time vs Kingston

I'm considering to send my kid to either Kingston or TT, both of which offers playgroup for babies aged from 6 months. I pick them because both emphasize 50% English & 50% Mandarin and they actually charged the same (~$4060 for 3 days/week). I learnt from BK that many mommies recommended Anfield instead. However, I want my kid to learn Mandarin in parallel (that means Chinese reading) to upkeep his Chinese level. Which one shall I pick ? Any mommies can comment ?

Re: Playgroup of Tutor Time vs Kingston

The best way to find out is to bring your bb there and let him (or yourself) choose.

I have two kids both been to TT's bb class, and my yonger one now 2.5 yr still with them.  I  like the staff there and the activities are very creative, lots of crafts, experiments, etc. I feel comfortable putting my kids there.
Didnt try Kingston at that time cos the rooms look less colourful , but still nice and clean. But I think if you plan to go with the Kinde and primary at a later stage, join at a younger age may be an advantage.

Anfield's more experience (as with longer history), but campus was worn out if compared to TT two years ago, not sure if its been renovated.

Again, just pay them visit and find out  :wink:

Re: Playgroup of Tutor Time vs Kingston

Dear mom2006
To my personal opinion, I would not choose TT.  I had sent my child to TT before .  Followings were my comments from what I viewed in the school.

1. The so called native speaking teachers are just Chinese speaking English and the real English native speakers are just being shared among the classes. They would come into the classroom for a short period of time (as per my child).
2. The so called crafts were not creative at all.  Just simple drawing on the white paper and nothing.
3. The staff there were not nice.  They could not remember your name even you have joined the school for period of time.  The amah would turn off the light once the school was finished and would hold the vaccum cleaner at the entrance and hinting that all of you had to go after school.
4. You were not allowed to send the child to the school before the school started.  Even they were inside the school, they would not response to the bell ring or even open the door , but just let you standing outside for 15 minutes.
5. The administrative staff was totally not polite.
6. The teacher for my child's class was not nice and would not greet to the children when they came into the class.
7.But still, the mandarin teacher was fine (in my child's class).
8. Though the decoration was new but the toys inside the playhouse were all not there, leaving the playhouse empty , nothing to play. And soon, the interior decoration will run out anyway, unless it will keep on renovation.
9. The so called cleaning policy which required all of us to take off our shoes when going into the school was meaningless.  Even we were following the rules to take off the shoes, their teachers and amah would wear the same pair of shoes running inside the school plus outside the campus.  They would keep on walking here and there with the same pair of shoes . What is that so called policy?

Sorry to all of the TT parents, but this was my experience and viewpoint. Anyway, I would not choose it again in the future .  Maybe I am so unfortunate to be arranged in such a class.  Some of the other parents would think ok and good as well.

Anyway, please take a visit to both schools and make the comparison by yourself.

Re: Playgroup of Tutor Time vs Kingston

my daughter join the playgroup in Kingston for half year, I think the PTH teacher is very good, very experience. (But she left this yr), and the English teacher is also good.

The place is large and have playground. The teachers will hug every child when they left. My comment is good although it is expensive.

Re: Playgroup of Tutor Time vs Kingston

DesMaMa,

Thanks a lot for your reply. I don't consider Anfield because I want at least some exposure to Chinese through PTW training for the kid. Could you share how's the PTW level in TT ? Do teachers use PTW for 50% if the time ? They read books with children or just singing songs/telling stories ? Thanks in advance.

Re: Playgroup of Tutor Time vs Kingston

Memory seems to fade out about the bb class...
its like divided into two 45-min sections (was that a 1.5hr class??), so for the first half you have the English teacher, and the second half the PTW.  Native speakers - English (I've met Canadian speakers, American speakers, UK...um but so far like no Australian)  and PTW (one actually is with TT for 5 years, she's excellent!).

Stories yes but maybe not reading books with words.  They make use of board books or cards, or puppets, or play pretend.  They have 'circle time' which teacher either read from the board or big flash cards with individual words on them later in upper class more often.  Lots of songs to sing, with action to follow the lyrics.  My kids like those hands-on activities so very ofter cloths get extra colours even if the little ones do wear aprons.

You may see some young ladies there in the class and they are the assistants.  Non native speaker though, and usually young girls helping the kids out with the crafts and tea etc.

Not to say its the best in town, but to me thats a good place for kids to go for leisure and fun.
Hope this help.
Desmama

Re: Playgroup of Tutor Time vs Kingston

OKMA

Thanks for your sharing also.

I did read some bad comments against TT in some other threads of BK. However, what I can spot from the market is the one operated by TT, Yew Chung and Kingston (if Mandarin is guaranteed, more structured, with larger compaus and kindys). In that case, would you rather recommend Yew Chung and Kingston ? I also heard that the English level of Yew Chung is not that native. I'd pay a visit to all these schools though but would really hope to hear more opinions from experienced mommies.

Re: Playgroup of Tutor Time vs Kingston

Dear mom2006
I have no experience in studying in Kingston. My child only is taking the mandarin class in YC.  Therefore I could not give you opinion on that.  But according to some of the primary students in YC with whom my husband met , the students studying there were all Chinese, no foreigners.  Therefore, what the English they could use and learn was from the teachers, not the peer group.  But anyway, it is only the case from the primary school, not the playgroup level.  Therefore, you 'd better check with other parents.

Re: Playgroup of Tutor Time vs Kingston

My husband and i loves Tutor Time so much as well, my first little boy learnt so much in TT in Kowloon Tong from  baby, now he's in their K1, he talk so much mandarin & english in class, that i can hear, and also at home too, my husband and i feel very happy about the school. Althought some of the parents said TT is not worth to go, we think that is 見仁見智, some will like it, some won't, but i think you need to try it at least, now, my bb is studying in thier playgroup again, i enjoy it too.
Some parent will said their teacher is very young, but how do you know they don't have enough experience, experience is not equal to any things, i am sure all the parent just want the parent is fully love and care of the children, and i think they did.
i love to see their big smile all the time, instead of some experiemence but without any patient teacher, i hate to see that in other school.
so, i think if you ready interest at their school, you need to try it first, because different people have different opinion, maybe i love it, maybe you not.

~~~~all of my friend and i like TT so much than their other school.
hope to see you there
Re: Playgroup of Tutor Time vs Kingston
My gal is also studying in TT (Toddler class) in kowloon tong.  I observe that she is very happy and enjoy to participate the activities in class.  I love TT's teaching program (half English and half Mandarin).  The teachers are very nice and helpful.
For zzgirl, what is your comment on TT's nursery / kinder class?  My gal will study N1 next year and I still thinking whether she will continue in TT
Re: Playgroup of Tutor Time vs Kingston
kira,
For me, my older son is studying in their k1 now, i think he's enjoy go to school so much, and i can see he learn a lot,i am sure that it worth to study there, and gis language improve a lot too.
i know they have some k3 graduates went into ICS, ISF & KJS or some PLK local primary last year, i think is quiet good, because it's only have few students in k3, i think they must be learn so much, and the teachers can totally take care of them.
Although TT is very expensive, it's still worth to go (and you can see what the school give to your child, and parent)
i am not totally said they good things, if you have any questions, let's join and try, you will totally agree with me
Re: Playgroup of Tutor Time vs Kingston
zzgirl,
Are you going to send your son to IS for primary education ?
As you know the path of education will depend on what kind of school you choose for the child.  I am not sure whether the standard of TT's kinder is good enough to get a seat in CIS / ESF / good local school.
