Your observation on Maths Olympaid may be correct, but definitely not the only route to demonstrate the stduent is maths gifted. You can use IQ test report, EPGY talent search results, the ranking in HK Primary Maths Contest ....

In general, form ranking is more important than maths alone, unless the kid extremely good in some world wide maths competition or widely recognised certificate.
