It depends on your kids and the school.
If your secondary school is an EMI but the primary one is a CMI, then, more guidance and suggestion should be given. On one hand, give the kids some allowance, e.g. respect their viewpoints, give them advice if necessary. I can see that parents do always have the "black and white areas" only, but grey is always with us! On the other hand, observe them, e.g. thier lifestyle - when do they come back home? talk with them about their school life, read their homework even though you don't understand what they are, at least you can read their handwriting and teachers' feedback.
Let your kids know that you are with them and support them so that they can turn to you if you need help! Not to let them think that you control them!
Tips: It can work better if you start from early age!
