Could those parents with child just accepted by SC for 08 term give advice?

My child has just been accepted by an international KG for N1 class starting from Sept 08.  As I target to apply SC K1 class next year, could you pls share your personal view with me on what I can start/plan to do for the time being in order to better equip my child and increase the chance of being accepted by SC by that time?  I also heard one of my friends saying that joining particular playgroups (e.g. XX workshop) will be helpful, is that true?
