Re: Help 聖嘉勒小學一問
Dear Trustme
No, I am not too negative about the school. I consider myself a critical person, and my comment about the school being one of the best schools in Hong Kong in terms of 校風is unusually favourable. Academically, Clarions are doing reasonably well. This can be seen from the information revealed in EMB’s inspection report in Dec 2002. It is an almost 100% passing rate in the three major subjects for HKCE and the percentage of having A to C grades is also significantly higher than the territory average. For example, the percentage of having A to C grades in mathematics in 2001 was as high as 60.1%. Given the fact that the schools intake is mainly from its feeder school St Clare's primary, and some of the latter's top brains have already switched to other schools like Ying Wah, the academic achievements of Clarions are more than respectable.
However, the same inspection report also stated “taken as a whole, teachers (at St Clare's) had low expectations on students" and recommended “teachers (St Clare's) should make greater effort to ensure that students achievements are comparable to their abilities and aspirations.” This is reason why I said the school has not given the emphasis on academic achievements the students deserve. The school is more concerned with turning out “nice girls”乖乖女. I heard an interesting comment before that Ying Wah is good at turning out women CEOs while St Clare's is good at turning out good housewives.
But, if you ask 100 parents living at mid-levels what their choice will be if her daughter is lucky enough to have offers from St Stephen Girls’ primary, Sacred Heart primary and St Clare's primary, what will be the percentage of parents selecting St Clare's? I think your guess will not be too far off from mine. What I have said in my previous posts is just sort of the consensus of most parents in this area, if they are not statements of facts. A Clarion is justified to be proud of her school, but St Clare's is really not an elite school in most people's opinion.
I understand the secondary section has been make changes since the new principal came two years ago. Such changes will take time to filter down to its complacent primary section.
If I am going to have a daughter again, as I am living at mid-levels, St Clare's primary will still be one of my top 3 choices. A typical clarion is a girl from a middle-class family with possibly a non-working mother, courteous and warm, reasonably intelligent while not too aggressive/ambitious.
Let's not forget the beautiful school uniform Clarions have. The “four-candy” school uniform is something a Clarion should be proud of. It matches perfectly with the image of a Clarion. Personally I would like to see a slightly bolder design for the winter uniform. For example, the much-loved St Stephen Girls’winter uniform is a distinct split from its traditional 長衫 in summer.
One more point, I was more on comparing the difficulties of the test/exam papers rather than the statements. As St Paul is using a lot of Singaporean materials of the same year in their English studies, undoubtedly their papers are more difficult. Naturally, their average scores are lower accordingly. Let's not forget it is always the relative scores which count.
